End of Season Review 2006/07

We started with a healthy sized squad this year and managed to sign a couple of experienced and younger players to boost the depth of the team. We lost arguably our most influential player before the season began but this didnt seem to affect us at all. We had a great pre-season and won 4 of the 5 games and drawing the other.

This season we started like a house on fire winning the first 12 games in the league and more than holding our own against some tough first division outfits. At one stage we were beating 1st division Coniston away from home but just couldnt hold on and ended up losing 3.1 but even so we played some great football.

We got knocked out of the other cups by Cartmel and Northbank Carlisle but again more than held our own in both of these games.

We drew our 13th game in the leauge but at this stage that didnt seem like a major blow!!

Our campaign got back on track so after 14 games we had won 13 and drawn 1 which was excellent stuff. This saw us promoted in Febuary which was a major achievment by everyone at the senior side.

The Divisional Cup saw us progress again to the semi final stage but we lost out due to losing 1 nil to Shap. This was the 2nd time we had reached this stage but it was to be heartbreak again but still a great achievment.

We lost our first leauge game on a day when if we had won would have been champions but again we lost to Shap narrowly going down 2.1.

We had already by then achieved promotion but the title was still in our own hands but another close defeat to Kendal Celtic saw the title slip through our fingers.

Our final game saw us complete our season with 15 wins, 1 draw and 2 defeats.

Shap kept on winning there games and pipped us to the title by 2 points.

This season we have played some really good football and the lads have given thier all each week. Of course there is disappointment at letting the title slip but everyone involved needs to remember we are a young team and to achieve promotion in our 2nd season is a fantastic!!!

Overall it has been a very good season and i would like to thank all the players.

Special thanks also go to the following people:

Simon for all his excellent work helping me run and train the team, thanks mate you have been awesome

Sue and Ian Poss, again as last year you guys have been fantastic and you help is much appreciated by everyone involved.

Krista for all her secretarial work and having to put up with me and my mad obsession for football and Kendal United!!

All the parents that attend our games home and away and you know who you are so thank you for your support.

Most importantly to all the players who have played this year, guys you have been an absolute pleasure to work with and i cant wait to get going again in July.

Look forward to seeing everyone on the 18th May for a top night

Kendal United versus Dent reserves away Saturday 28th April

United travelled up to Dent on Saturday for our final game of the season, with a host of players unavaliable for differing reasons a make shift side made the journey.

We started very fast and didnt allow Dent many touches of the ball and looked very relaxed knocking it about. We could and should have had a few goals in the first 10 minutes but just couldnt seem to find the target. That said it only took 15 minutes to get off the mark after good play betwen Danny Poss and Nathan Wooff saw the latter slip a shot under the keeper to give United a 1.0 lead. Jason Tucker who was playing as a striker had a couple of great chances but his headers didnt quite find the target and it only looked a matter of time before we scored our second. We switched off from the keepers long clearance and allowed Dent to equalise 1.1.

That didnt stop us pushing on and creating chance after chance with Alistar Wilson having a great game at the back and making excellent runs to help support attacks. We were awarded a penalty after one of the Dent players handled in the box so up stepped Wilson to fire his shot deep into the corner making it 2.1 to united.

Dent just couldnt live with our movement and we must have had 10 good chances to score but at half time it remained 2.1 to us.

Half time Dent 1 United 2

We started the 2nd half in a similar vein and some of our football was excellent. The game had some truly comedy moments as we missed some absolute sitters. The spirit the game was played in was very relaxed so Dent just couldnt get close to us, we went further ahead through Andy Johnson who poked a close range effort in at the far post making it 3.1 after an hour. Chances fell to Nathan Turner who was having a good afternoon down the left but it just wouldnt go in for him. We scored our fourth through Tucker who knocked the ball past the keeper and just beat Possy to the ball to poke him from a yard out making it 4.1.

By now Dent had all but given up and every United player wanted the ball as it seemed like a good game to try and score one last goal before the end of the season. At times that cost us the opportunity to go further ahead as we tried to hard to create the perfect goal.

We got our 5th and final goal through Gareth Stewart who had a rare run out in the last 20 minutes , he headed a great cross against the bar then managed to connect onto the rebound and beat the keeper comfortably. 5.1.

In the last few minutes we created chances but in all honesty if we had taken the chances we made we could have had a cricket score.

Fianl score Dent 1 United 5

This was an excellent performance from the team, players were asked to play out of position and the likes of Steve Moss and Wooffy hadnt played for most of the season but they helped us out on a day we were really short so i thank them for that.

Everybody put in loads of effort and im chuffed with everyone today as we worked very hard in what was effectivley a dead rubber for both sides.

So that brings our second season to an end and what a season it has been!!!

Man of the match:

Their were a few contenders today but Alistar Wilson was superb at the back and his attacking support play was excellent. He has had to be patient this year and take his chances when they come which he has done really well. There is no doubt Ally will become a superb player over the next few seasons and he can enjoy his summer knowing he will be in the starting 11 come next season. Well done young man you had a great afternoon and i think we have found our new penalty taker ha ha

We finish with the following stats:

Played 18

Won 15

Drew 1

Lost 2

Scored 68 and conceded 25

This means we finished a comfortable second and missed out on the title by 2 points but everyone must remember what a cracking season we have had.

Promotion was the aim in the summer and that has been achieved playing some fantastic football but most importantly with a good attitude and enjoyment.

Kendal United versus Shap Reserves Saturday 7th April Austinwren Cup Semi-final

For the second year running United went to Lunesdale on Saturday in the divisional cup semi final. With late news of Pilch being unavaliable and Thoburn still out through injury there was no recognised keeper avaliable at 11am on the morning of the game.

Liam Poss back from uni for easter bravely took up my request for him to go in goal for the afternoon. With no Scott, Wilson and Olly Davies 50% fit the squad was being stretched to the full.

The game started as in the previous encounters with Shap very cagey and tight with both teams setting out their stalls. We looked a team lacking in confidence at times and shap allowed zero time for us to move the ball or think about a pass. We had a good moment invoving Heads and Johnson but somehow the ball didnt go in. Whilst that was going on United recieved another blow as Davies caught a late boot to the ankle and severe swelling saw him leave the game after 30 minutes. So now we had a strike force of Jason Tucker and Graeme Archer and this of course meant we lacked the quality balls Tucker provides but needs must. Tucker really harried the Shap back four and although we had made life hard for ouselves at times we had matched them for 43 minutes but then we switched off. A long ball was allowed to bounce in the box and a snapped shot beat everyone and found the back of the net. The referee blew for half time soon after and everyone ws gutted we had let a goal slip at that time in that in the game.

Half time United 0 Shap 1

We needed to remain calm and play football but up the tempo and movement to create time to play the ball. We started well and looked the more likely team to score but again the Shap keeper had glue on his gloves and he caught everything and even when he didnt he collected really well. Chances fell to Danny Poss and a couple of good moments came to Johnny brennan but we couldnt hit the target.

By now Shap had settled for the 1 goal win and sat deep in there formation, we had good opportunities and liam Poss in goal had few moments to really worry about. Any moments they did have seemed to come from our mistakes and at times we made some really daft ones. Our luck was really out when captain Warwick got a whack on an already heavily bruised shin and had to go off as he was too sore to continue. A great shot whizzed past the post and it had the feeling of being one of those afternoons. Soon after we knew it wouldnt be our day as a cross that beat the keeper and the defender looked goal bound but hit the dry ground and span wide.

We tried but couldnt find a way back into the game and it wasnt through a lack of trying.

Final score United 0 Shap 1

This was a very dissapointing result because as usual we played the better football but Shap played a smart game and put pressure on us as soon as we got the ball.

The dissapointment was clear to see but we took it on the chin and hats off to Shap they have kept on winning and stuck to their game plan to stop us playing.

Many thanks to liam poss for going in goal and the back four did well to protect him but it takes balls to go in goal for such an important game.

Today we lacked important players and that got worse with the injuries but that as they say is football!!!

Man of the match:

In games like this the little simple things become so important and Lorne Poss today was fantastic as he stuck to his task all game. He tried to get forward and support when he could and as usual he gave his all and defended very well. A fantastic game from lorne and again he showed his quality and how well he hs adapted to adult football.

Im sorry this report is late but im om my level 2 coaching badge base course at the moment and its tough but an excellent course.

Kendal United versus Kendal Celtic Saturday 31st March

United entertianed local rivals Celtic on Saturday hoping to secure 3 more points towards our aspirations of being champions.

With a bright sun and bumpy pitch United knew this wasnt going to be an easy game. The game started fast and United were presented with a very early opporunity that almost came to early in the game and Olly Davies just couldnt quite find the target, they broke straight after that chance and saw a great effort whizz over the bar. The game settled with both sides neutralising each other all over the pitch, for some reason we were very wasteful and tried to use the strong wind in our backs but this played straight into Celtics hands. After 10 minutes we found ourselves a goal down again from what seems to be our achillies heel and that is a deep corner. We had talked about this before the game but Celtic are a tall side and made excellent use of there height advantage. 1.0 to Celtic.

We didnt really recover from this and allowed Celtic time and possesssion on the ball which caused us problems. Our bright spot was the excellent wing play down the right from Jason Tucker who was delivering great balls. We had a couple of moments but fell further behind again from lapse marking 2.0 to Celtic.

We just didnt have any cohesion and this tends to be a problem for us after a couple of weeks with no games. That said we just didnt talk or make good descisions and that meant our play was very bitty and lacked the edge we normally have.

A welcome half time break gave united a chance to re-group.

Half time united 0 Celtic 2

Nick heads joined the midfield and the plan was to get the ball down and try to probe down the wings. We got a chance staright after half time but again Davies didnt make the most of it and the keeper collected with ease. This was now starting to look like it wasnt going to be our day. Our football improved and Celtic didnt really break us down like they had in the first half.

We created half chances but didnt relly make good use of the ball when in possession. With 25 minutes to go it seemed our luck might have changed as we won a very soft penalty. This wasnt taken well and the keeper made what was a very easy save and it looked like we were doomed to lose today.

We kept going and an excellent ball from Johnny Brennan should have been put away but everyone stopped waiting for the referees whistle but it didnt come and the chance was wasted as we all stood still. With 15 minutes to go we got a breakthrough as a good ball found its way through to Nathan Turner who had replaced the jaded Davies and he slippe it past the keeper making it 2.1 to Celtic.

We had hoped this would be the spark for a fightback but soon after were reminded by Celtic of what they can do as the cracked a fine effort off the bar. We pushed probed and harried but it wasnt going to be our day and the score finished a very dissapointing 2.1 to Celtic

Full time score Celtic 2 United 1

To say everyone was dissapointed would be a massive understatement as this was a game we really needed to win. Celtic made it very tough for us but being honest we were our own worst enemy with poor passing and marking letting us down. We just didnt talk enough and tried to play the ball in the air when we know our strength is on the deck and this cost us the valuable 3 points.

For the first time this season the title is now out of our hands and we need Celtic to beat Shap for us next Tuesday night for us to have a chance.

We have a massive game this Saturday against Shap in the cup and need to pick ourselves up ready for what promises to be a tough encounter at lunesdale.

We need to remember what we have achieved in a short time and relax and play our game the way we know we can to have any chance!!

I hope we can lift ourselves and knock Shap before this vital leauge game against Celtic is played the Tuesday after.

Lads you have done really well this year and from a coaching point of view you train well and work hard every week, but on Saturday we need to up our game 20% to have any chance of a cup final place which im sure we can do.

Man of the match

One player shone through with true quality today and that was Jason Tucker who really troubled Celtic with good passing and crossing. When the team isnt firing you need a spark and Tucker kept trying to get us back in the game. His corners were superb and you can see in games like this how much Jason has improved over the past couple of years.

Well done Jason great game

As there is no game this coming Saturday 24th March, the squad is needing a get together so lads its a 1pm meet at our pitch for a training session ready for the remaning fixtures.

Kendal United versus Endmoor Reserves, Saturday 10th March

United entertained Endmoor last Saturday in the quater finals of the Austinwren Cup. After a tough game against them in the leauge recently and our dissapointing result up at Shap it was hoped we could bounce back.

The game started very flat and Endmoor must have scored with some long shots the week before as everytime they got the ball they shot!!

Slowly but surely we got into our rythmn and although we didnt have our crisp passing game we were doing enough to create the odd opening. Good play down the left from Mark Barnes Davis saw a ball just elude James Scott in front of goal. We had a few half decent chances but nothing clean cut. Being honest it was looking like being a pretty quiet game. 10 minutes before half time we got the breakthrough we deserved. A good ball down the right saw Jason Tucker collect the ball and go round 3 if not 4 players and plant his shot past the static keeper. It was a great individual goal from Tucker!!

We still didnt look ourselves and at times gave the ball away as soon as we had won it which was causing frustration.

Half time United 1 Endmoor 0

We needed to be more attack minded after half time as they were there for the taking but we needed to position ourselves better when in possession.

Johhny Brennan came on for the 2nd half and both wingers were told to stay wide and try to break down the stubborn Endmoor defence. We got joy from this option almost instantly as Brennan came in from the left and collected a ball which he finished with ease making it 2.0 to united.

We looked in control of the game now but at times we struggled with our own play and caused ourselves a few nervous moments. Scott and Olly Davies both had half chances but it just wasnt going in today!!

We got a deserved 3rd but only after Endmoor had rolled a ball along our bar in what turned out to be a good save by Pilch in goal.

We got our third and again it was Brennan who got in from the left and almost backheeled the ball past the keeper making it 3 nil with 20 minutes to go.

By now we were solid at the back and we witnessed a superb calm display from Ali Wilson who was excellent all game. We probed and pushed and looked more composed on the ball. In the final 15 minutes we could and should have had more but both sides seemed glad a very boring game was over!!!

Full time United 3 Endmoor res 0

This was not United at their best but we got back to winning ways against a fired up Endmoor. They came to us on the back of a 6 nil win over coniston so we had to be on our guard, that said they rarely troubled Pilch in goal.

This was a very good response to the game the week before as critics were now asking would we fold up after our defeat. Well the answer was no we arent as the result shows.

The final 3 games are all ahead of us now and we need to keep patient and strong ready for the run in. This result see`s united into the semi finals for the 2nd year on the bounce and we meet Shap so hopefully we wont need too much motivation!!

Man of the Match

Ali Wilson started at left back and again he looked so calm and composed on the ball. He works very hard in training and has stayed really patient awaiting his chance. After games like today Ali has shown he is now ready for a regular start, with changes bound to happen over the summer Ali can rest safely in the knowledge he is a massive part of our future palns at United. Well played young man absolute quality!!!

Sorry this report has taken a week to appear but after a large weekend and a very busy week at work i just didnt seem to get time to write it up!!

Kendal United versus Shap Reserves Saturday 3rd March

United travelled to second placed and title chasing rivals Shap on Saturday on what looked at best a heavy pitch. We were mindfull before kick off that 3 points would clinch the title for us so it was a case of concentrating and trying to play our game.

We started really well and passed the ball about with confidence and could have gone ahead in the first few minutes but a weak effort was easily saved by the Shap keeper. Both Olly Davies and James Scott looked lively up front. The early play showed lots of promise but Shap weathered the storm and our final ball and our usually so effective decision making were letting us down. Shap settled and played their usual tactic of high balls and bully boy tactics to great effect. That said Thorbs in goal was rarely troubled as even when they did manage to get a shot in they were well wide or high. By now Shap were starting to bare there teeth and that is not easy to play against.

We did have flashes of good play and when we clicked the game looked very simple, again though as in previous matches prior to the Burneside game we wanted the ball for too long. The half was looking like finishing 0.0 but we fell asleep at a late corner and it was gleefuly put away making it 1.0 to Shap. Soon after we nearly fell 2 behind as again we switched off and a good effort thankfully came back off the bar.

After starting and playing better all half we came in a goal down.

Half time Shap 1 United 0

We needed to re-group at half time and try to put our own game into effect, too many times in the first half we wasted free things and switched off plus didnt get close enough to them in midfield. We began the second half well and moved the ball about a lot better, we now used the right hand side of the pitch to much better effect. Shap kept pushing away and winning corners where they are so dangerous from but we held out well and counter attacked quickly. Our play was now much quicker and it seemed only a matter of time before we got on level terms. We didnt seem to get the run of the ball and the Shap keeper was having a great game so it wasnt being taken for granted we could break them down. Frustration showed for both sides and this wasnt a game played in the most gentlemanly manor to say the least. A deep corner for united found its way to the back post where captain Rob Warwick was there to fire through the crowd to bring united level with 25 minutes to go. It looked at this stage as we would move up a gear and take control of the game as we were creating all the chances. By now the full backs were helping united in attack with Lorne Poss having a very solid game down the right linking well with Jason Tucker, as was the ever reliable and looking beter each game sub Alistair Wilson. Just as we looked like getting on top disaster struck for United. We conceded a free kick out near the touchline and our main concern was stopping them getting there headers in when the resulting free kick flew in right at the back of the goal over a despairing Thorbs who just couldnt reach it. This was such an unlucky goal to conceed for United but there was plenty of time to get back into the game. Tucker saw the keeper save at his feet after he had beaten the last man and Dan Poss had the ball nicked off his toe just as he went to fire a shot in. We pushed and harried Shap and at times left ourselves exposed at the back as Warwick was now being played as an extra striker to try to get a way back into the game late on. A top drawer save from Thorbs in goal kept the final score from being 3 with only a few minutes to go, what a save as he dived backwards to flick the ball over the bar. Had that gone in it would have been cruel for united

The lads tried really hard and we certainly gave Shap a nervous finish but it wasnt to be our day.

Final score Shap 2 United 1

Everyone involved was dissapointed as this would have put the title issue to bed for this year but today it wasnt to be. At times we played some good stuff but we fell into there trap on too many occasions and Shap capatalised on this where possible. We have to take this result as a punch on the nose and not a knockout blow as we have 2 games left to play and remain in the box seat. I think the nerves got to everyone today and believe me Shap away with their vocal fans and muddy pitch is not an easy place to go anytime of year. Our promotion may have had an effect today as we seemed short of that 10% extra we normally have in the tank that beats sides late on, i hope after todays game that desire returns and we can push on and win it from here. My only point to the lads would be is remember we must play OUR game to finish the job.

Well done lads and you were unlucky today but you took your first defeat in the leauge really well and proved we can win and lose with grace. That said there was many a dissapointed player in the dressing room after so lets remember that and enjoy our last 2 games.

Man of the match:

Today saw an excellent performance from Lorne Poss, although he had a quiet first half in the 2nd he really got involved. His hard work up and down the wing helped united to maintain attacking momentum and we needed this today. At times he put in vital tackles and he does get some flack for being vertically challenged ( sorry Lorno couldnt resist ) but he is an excellent defender and brave to boot!!!

Top game well done Lorne

Kendal United verus Burneside A Saturday 17th February

United entertained a much strengthened Burneside on Saturday who obviously felt it necessary to bring a few first and 2nd teamers down. This is so dissapointing but a mark of how far we have come this season that teams need to recruit in players from higher divisions.

That said we love a challenge and this was going to be a really good test of our ability after a couple of very easy games previously.

The game started at 100 miles an hour and we found ourselves a goal down in the first 30 seconds after an unlucky deflection saw the ball fly past pilch in goal.1.0 to Burneside. Straight from the kick off we were back on level terms after a sublime finish from Olly Davies, he collected a through ball and lobbed the keeper brilliantly. 1.1

We were playing some excellent stuff and after 4 minutes we took a deserved lead through captain Rob Warwick. Following a corner the ball bounced around the box and eventually found Warwick on the edge of the box and he fired a low drive that flew into the bottom corner 2.1 United

Our football was some of the best for many weeks and Burneside couldnt live with us anywhere on the pitch!!! We kept pushing and probing and we managed to go further ahead with a typical poachers goal, Nick Heads was in the box when the defence didnt clear the ball he popped up and finished from very close range to give us a 3.1 lead after 9 minutes.

Our touch and movement was sublime and everybody was putting in masses of energy into our play. Jason tucker and Nathan Turner were tearing up and down the wings causing all sorts of problems for the Burneside defence who just couldnt cope. On the 20 minute mark we managed to go even further ahead with James Scott now getting in on the act. He worked himself into a good shooting position and his low drive beat the keeper easily making it an amazing 4.1.

We continued to play some great football and create chance after chance, that said Burneside presented us with many problems when they managed to get forward. On the half hour mark they managed to pull another goal back again from a poorly defended corner making it 4.2.

This game never slowed and both teams could and should have had more goals but a combination of poor finishing and good goalkeeping kept the score at 4.2 as the half time whistle blew.

Half time United 4 Burneside 2

What a half from both teams and surely the game had to slow eventually, our plan was to keep pushing and try to make the game safe. We started really well and created some good opportunities but by now the game had become a bit niggly with both sides commited to say the least! We needed to keep our concentration and we were doing this well for the first 15 minutes of the half but then a mini disaster struck. Following a accidental back past pilch had a moment he would rather forget and somehow the ball slipped under his foot and went in making the game 4.3.

We looked a bit nervous and Burneside now had their tails up looking for the equaliser. We defended well with Paul Rutland having an excellent game alongside the ever improving Warwick but by now were getting nervy and making mistakes. With 20 minutes to go we were harshly given a penalty against us and everyone thought here we go but our luck held as the penalty was put well wide by the Burneside player. Justice was done!!

We knew we had to push on and try to get another to make the game safe and this did leave gaps at the back and Burneside did have a couple of good moments. We looked like scoring again and our earlier football returned and we hassled and probed everywhere on the pitch. Turner was presented with a superb chance but just couldnt keep his header down, it wasnt long after that we did score again. Another scramble in the box saw the ball fall to Andy Johnson who had just come off the bench. He tapped it home and the points now looked a little more safe. We created good chances in the remaining 10 minutes but couldnt manage to beat the keeper. The pace of the game never seemed to slow so the final whistle was welcomed by everyone and the result meant we had achieved our goal for the season!!

Final score United 5 Burneside 3

What a game this was with both sides giving everything they had, goes to show that bringing players into a team like Burneside did does not always work!! We needed that pressure today as we always perform better against good outfits, for some reason all the games with them over the past 2 years have been high scoring affairs. Fantastic game of football today and we totally deserved the 3 points that confirms we are now promoted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What a season we have had so far as we have scored over 60 goals and accrued 43 points from an avaliable 45 which is highly impressive.

The lads deserve a massive pat on the back and myself and simon are very very proud of them for this massive achievment after only 2 seasons as a team. The lads work hard every week on the training ground and listen to what we say and work hard to get better and they have done this with real passion this year.

Congratulations lads you have done Kendal United proud!!

My only note of caution is that we have 3 games left and if we can win these we are going to go up as champions. So lads lets enjoy the moment but for now lets save the celebrations until we have finished far enough ahead of everyone to win it.

The chairman has promised us some champagne so lets push on and win it then i will call him and we can really celebrate.

Man of The Match:

Although we were sublime going forward we needed real strength at the back, crucial headers were there to be won and today Paul Rutland was superb. He won just about ever header he could and told the boys straight when we started to get nervy. Games like these need someone to be on top form and today he was just that. An excellent game paul well done and it confirms what a great signing in the summer he was.

Windermere versus Kendal united Saturday 3rd Febuary

United travelled through to face windermere on Saturday hoping to get back to winning ways after tough game the previous week. With a couple of regular players missing it gave a chance to other members of the squad to shine. We started slowly and struggled with the bumpy partly frozen pitch, Windermere lacked any real ambition and this was frustrating as we didnt get going. Slowly but surely we started to gain a bit of rythmn, a good chance fell to Paul Rutland and his header went just over. He didnt have to wait long to get his first goal for the club, from a corner he got the perfect contact and powerfully headed past the keeper. 1.0

The goal lifted us a little and a few minutes later we went further ahead through James Scott, he turned and ran towards the keeper firing a powerfull shot that the keeper got a hand to but couldnt keep out. 2.0. The half looked like petering out when we conceded a daft free kick, the ball fell to the smallest player on the pitch and somehow he squeezed his header past pilch in goal. Pilch had been a bystander all game and it was a poor goal to let in right on half time but in no way was it the keepers fault.

Half time

Windermere 1 united 2

We lacked any real pasion in the first half so the plan was to up the worload and keep them on the back foot. The first 10 minutes were very forgetable and both sides didnt really get going, although pilch in goal did have to save at the feet of a Windermere player the game was very flat. United needed to find that third goal but we just couldnt seem to find the right ball or shot to test the keeper. The introduction of Mark Davis in midfield who came in from the left back position was instant, his work rate and sheer energy started to drive the team forward. With Lorne Poss coming on in his usual position we looked a much more balanced side. We now had control of the game and it was Scott who again found the net, he collected the ball on the edge of the box and then cooly lobbed the onrushing keeper with a superb finsh. That was scott`s 16 leauge goal of the season and one of the best he has scored. 3.1.

We relaxed a bit more and by now we were starting to pepper the windermere goal regularly, the football was all united now and we started playing some good stuff. Graeme Archer who has been back for a few weeks made a rare start up front but proved to be an excellent choice in the place of the injured Davies. All game Archer had hurried and chased anything that came his way and it seemed it wasnt going to be his day when he fired a shot that cracked back off the post. He needent have worried as a few minutes later he ran onto a through ball and fired a shot comfortably past the keeper making it 4.1 to united. By now it was one way traffic and the game was finished in style by Jason Tucker in what was a truly excellent goal.Tucker controlled the ball and looked up to see the keeper static, he then fired a delicatly controlled shot into the postage stamp top right hand corner of the goal. Some finish!!!

That was job done for united who ended deserved 5.1 winners.

Final score

Windermere 1 United 5

Not a classic game of football today and although we lacked cohesion and finesse at times it was a job well done. This time last year we lost an awful game here due to a poor referee, today the referee was excellent and controlled the game very well.

In the last 25 minutes we looked like our usual selves and pushed the ball around well, lets hope we can take this forward to the next game.

We are close to the ultimate goal now and must continue this hard work ethic right up to the final game and then the rewards could be special.

Man of the match

Again we saw today the best of Mark Barnes davis, he played very well first half in his usual left back role and was always looking to get forward. When he was asked to step into central midfield he did it with gusto and he really stirred up the team. When he is in this form he is unbeatable anywere he plays. Top game Mark well done!!!

Kendal united versus greystoke reserves Saturday 27th January

After a month long break in games due to the terrible weather lately united returned to leauge action on Saturday with a tough encounter against a very physical greystoke.

As expected Greystike got very close to us and allowed very little time on the ball, we looked like a team who hadnt played for a few weeks early on. After the intial 10 minutes of stalemate the game started to liven up and it was united who looked the most likely to score. We had a couple of good chances and it was hoped they wouldnt come back to haunt us!! After a couple of dangerous corners united fell behind to a shot struck at the far post giving Thoburn in goal no chance. 1.0 to Greystoke

This woke us up and we started to move the ball about much quicker and soon got back on level terms through Mark Davis. After his hard work and forward running it was reward for Davis to be on the end of the final ball to score. 1.1

We had our tails up now and a few minutes later a good ball to Dan Poss saw him fire a great finish past the keeper to make it 2.1 to United.

A spectacular overhead kick from James Scott and a few other good chances came our way but at half time we had our noses in front.

Half time United 2 Greystoke 1

There was no doubt at half time we had not played particularly well and were fortunate to be ahead. We needed to move the ball faster and try to match them in the tackles. The second half started in a similar vein to the first with both sides probing but not creating too much. The next goal was going to be crucial, we looked comfortable at the back and kept Greystokes opportunities to a minimum so it was very dissapointing to have a soft penalty descion given against us. It was buried making the scoreline 2.2.

We had to endure a brief spell of pressure but although not always pretty we battled away trying to create chances. Unusually we struggled to create clear cut chances and even the little bits of luck you need sometimes in the box deserted us today. We now had Greystoke pretty much camped in there own half but we couldnt find the balls or runs to make any real impression on the Greystoke back line. A few tactical changes were made and it was very hard to work out a way to break a very resolute and now happy to hold on to a draw greystoke side. That said they created an opportunity more down to us pushing for the winner more than anything else and Thoburn in goal produced a fantastic save to keep us from going a goal behind. We kept going but still couldnt find the crucial final balls to open them up and a back post header from returning olly Davies went wide much to his frustration. The game by now looked like being a draw and thats the way it ended.

Final score United 2 Greystoke reserves 2

This was as expected a bruising game against a very pumped up Greystoke, they had a game plan and they never waiverd from that all game. We more than matched them for the majority of the time but giving away daft free kicks and corners meant we put ourselves under pressure.

Although we dropped our first points of the season we shouldnt be too dissapointed as we battled hard and never gave up hope of getting the winner. It is hoped we can get a run of regular games as its not easy to get rythmn with some many games off recently. No excuses from us we just need to go out and play our game but be mindful that all our opponents are pumped up and want to be the first to beat us.

Man of the match:

Mark Barnes-Davis was superb today he never stopped working or running all game, he made some excellent runs forward and tackled like a demon. When Marks in this kind of form he is a pleasure to watch and he got a much deserved goal today after his own hardwork. Top performance today Mark well done!!

Kendal United V Endmoor KGR Res 30th December

Following heavy rain overnight this game was in serious doubt until just before lunchtime but the pitch looked good so the game went ahead.

United started strongly and went one up in the first 30 seconds following a shot from James Scott there was Dan Poss to bury the rebound. 1.0 to united.

This looked to be the perfect start but within about a minute poor defending allowed Endmoor to equalise past Simon in goal who was covering our unavaliable usual keepers. It got worse after this and we just didnt seem to be able to defend properly and allowed Endmoor to run at us. They took a deserved lead when again poor defending allowed an Endmoor striker to run after a ball all the united defenders believed would roll out for a goal kick. It didnt roll due to the surface and a good ball into the box was buried making it 2.1 to Endmoor after 8 minutes. We were for the first time this season truly awful and allowed Endmoor to run the game, they scored a third on the 10 minute mark so we were now staring down the barrel 3.1 to Endmoor. We just couldnt get going and Endmoor should have scored a fourth but luckily for united it was missed. Nothing was going our way but we didnt deserve anything with the way we were playing!! Slowly but surely we started to play our game but the pitch was now really starting to chop up and this didnt help our passing game. We started to create a few chances and the Endmoor keeper was now having to pull of good saves and he made a great save from Dan Poss whos shot looked certain to go in but was tipped over the bar. We had by now started to argue with each other and this played into our opponents hands as they could see we were losing our patience. We managed to get a goal back before half time through Scott who finished a good chance well 3.2 to endmoor. Soon after the referee blew for half time and gave us chance to re-group.

Half time United 2 Endmoor 3

Calming words and a change of tactic at half time were hoped we could get ourselves back into the game. We started much brighter and a tactical change saw Dan Poss go back into his midfield role and Nathan Turner had another run up front. This made an instant difference as we now started to move the ball about much better, soon after we equalised through Scott who scored his 14th goal of the season with another calm finish making it 3.3 with half an hour left to play. A fine double save from Hansen in goal kept the scores level after again poor defending from united. This proved to be crucial as soon after the impressive Poss put united ahead with a typical of him quality finish making the score 4.3 to United. By now we were in complete control and another injury meant Alistair Wilson got another run on the left wing, he was his usual calm and composed self and contributed to us going forward with confidence. By now Endmoor had run out of steam and their first team keeper was now being kept very busy, he made a couple of excellent saves and kept them in the game. We had now started to defend like we know we can and kept Endmoor at bay fairly well, quite how we didnt score a hat full in this period of the game was amazing. By now it was a matter of time before we scored again and it was Dan Poss who again found a great finish to complete his hat trick and put United 5.3 up. This was an impressive turn around from being 3.1 down to now leading the game 5.3 with 10 minutes to go, we even had time to miss a penalty which would have put a bit of gloss on the result. We could have had more goals and with Karl Birch making his United debut following a bad knock on Lorne Postlethwaite he looked like being the player to score for united. His volley late on was superb and he certainly looks like another player who has a lot to offer united in the future. By now the pitch was like toffee and both teams did well to keep trying to play football but it wasnt easy. The referee blew for full time and united had completed a very impressive fight back to take all three points against a much improved Endmoor.

Final score United 5 Endmoor 3

Credit to Endmoor today they came at us from the start and even after going a goal down they pushed and harried us all over the pitch. Considering we beat them 8.2 earlier in the season they certainly came and gave it a good go. That said we were pretty awful and the players didnt seem to take the managers words for caution seriously and we allowed them far to much time on the ball. At half time we needed to clam down and play as a team which we did very well and this got us back into the game and then allowed us to push on and win. We must learn from today and remember every teams is approaching us with a "cup final" mentality and want to be the first to break our unbeaten record. So with 6 games to go we are in pole position but today was a stark reminder that if we dont work hard it could all go pear shaped in the latter stages of the season.

Credit to the lads though as we have now won 12 out of 12 league games this season and sit 15 points clear on new years day so lets hope we can now use our superior fitness and tecnique to good use and push on and win it. Training is now going to be crucial so full attendance from all the players is a must!!

Man of the match:

Today was one of our toughest tests and the players needed to stand up and be counted on occasions like this. One player did this today and produced an outstanding perfomance for united, Dan Poss was superb and once he returned to his midfield role he ran the game with excellent passing and movement plus the three crucial goals. To watch Dan play you would think he has played this level for a long time but this is only his second season so that makes him even more impressive. Well done dan you were superb today and thouroughly deserve to be man of the match.

Just one final note for the year and this is for all the coaches at united, over this season we have come up against a few players that made their way through uniteds ranks such as, cam mckay, sean atkinson and Dan Fearon and they are all playing very well at their respective clubs. This has to be down to you and all the hard work you have put in over the years with them, although they didnt choose united for senior football they have gone on and found a club and are all playing very well. Good luck to those players and i hope they find sucess in the future. As for the players who chose united they have been superb so long may the production line of good players continue and even if they dont play for us they are making local football a better place to play than ever!!

Happy new year everyone and lets hope its a prosperous new year for all at Kendal United

Kendal united versus Coniston reserves away Saturday 23rd December

United made the trip up to coniston on saturday to complete our league fixtures against them for this season. It was very obvious at the warm up that Coniston had taken advantage of no first team fixture to draft in few extra bodies. This has happened a few times this season and we are getting used to teams doing this against us. We started slowly and neither side got much of a grip of the ball in the opening minutes but united showed glimpses of good football. A solid defence allowed united to up the pace but at times our basic pasing was just letting us down at vital moments. United moved the ball well down the left and good play between Johnny Brennan and Mark Barnes Davis saw the former presented with a couple of good opportunities. United now had Coniston pinned back in their own half as we probed and harried them all over the pitch. We had a succesion of corners and good wing play down both flanks caused Coniston all sorts of problems, how some of the chances didnt go in was a miracle!! We kept going and Captain Rob Warwick was unlucky with a fine header that just rose over the bar. We had reduced Conston to the odd counter attack against us but they were dealt with really well by the united back four. With only a few minutes to go before half time we finally made the breakthrough we deserved. United had peppered the Coniston goal all half and following an effort on goal the ball fell to Dan Poss who proded it goalwards, it was then poked home right in front of the keeper by Andy Johnson. Not a pretty goal but a vital one, 1.0.

We could and should have had more than the one goal at this stage but we went into the break with a slender one goal lead.

Half time Conston 0 United 1

We had totaly dominated the first half so we set out with a similar game plan but with an emphasis to get the ball to the wingers when possible. We started slowly and coniston now used their substitutes who were all first division standard players. They started to make life uncomfortable for us, that said we gave the ball away far to easy and that caused unecessary pressure on our goal. Coniston could have equalised but for a good save from Andrew Thoburn in goal plus some excellent defending from Warwick and Paul Rutland kept them at bay. We went through a very frustrating period of poor ball retention and sloppy passing which was presenting Coniston with half opportunities. Our play improved slightly and then we got the break we needed, a good through ball allowed Jason Tucker to run at the keeper and at the last moment he slotted the ball past the keeper making it 2.0 to united.

We relaxed a little after this and our football got better and we started to pin Coniston back more. The introduction of Alistair Wilson in the unfamilar position of the wing saw him nearly scored with his first touch but it just went wide. Nathan turner got another run up front and he tried his best to get shots away but he couldnt quite find the target. By now we were looking a little more comfortable but needed the security of a third goal to ensure the result. We managed to get this as James Scott was presented with a similar opportunity to Tuckers earlier and he did what Jason did and ran at the keeper and slotted home from close range. So with 10 minutes to go it was looking like a good away 3 points, it even gave us time to give Liam Poss a rare chance to play up front as he had been patient when the game was tight. 3.0 is how it turned out to be with the referee blowing for full time and another welcome win for united.

Final score

Coniston Reserves 0 United 3

Not the best of games from united as we were rusty after having a 2 week break but we did enough to deserve the 3 points. At times we gave the ball away too easily but scored the goals at vital times and defended well under pressure. The first team players for Coniston did make a difference but the lads arent scared of playing better opposition and that showed today. So with 1 game to go before the new year we have put ourselves in a great position but must not get complacent and continue to work hard.

Man of the match:

Today we needed to be calm and work hard off the ball and play as a team, on these types of occasions you need a strong captain and we had that in Rob Warwick. He has done a great job this year and deserves to be the captain after todays performance. In the second half a couple of his tackles were from the top drawer as was his leadership skills under pressure. Well done Rob top performance today.

Kendal united versus windermere reserves saturday 2nd December

United returned to league action on Saturday after the disappointment of the Shap game being called off the week before. We didn’t have the ideal preparation for the game as we had all been out on our club Christmas party the night before. I am sure the lads will agree it was a top night and we all had a good time, I will write and thank Mrs Richardson for again supplying us with a free night. So a few pints, a meal and late night aren’t ideal but we hoped it wouldn’t effect us too much.

We started slowly and didn’t really get a grip on the game, when we did have the ball we either under hit the pass or put too much on it. We managed to work a couple of early chances but at the same time we allowed Windermere to attack us. Normally we are a very solid team but early on in this game we were wobbling a bit, Windermere thought they had taken the lead but an offside flag denied them a goal. This still didn’t shake us up enough but we where creating more chances, one soon paid off and a ball across the box found Nick Heads who fired his shot into the corner. 1.0 united. Good movement meant when we did attack we looked like scoring but we have got to learn to take our chances better.

We stepped our game up a bit even though we were not fluent by any means, a couple of great chances went begging and it wasn’t looking like being our day. We started to fall into the trap set by Windermere and played their game and got involved with the referee. That is so unlike us and I think it was the pure frustration of not taking our chances plus the referee being a little indifferent.

Half time United 1 Windermere 0

A vociferous team talk took place at half time with some players being asked to calm down, we were playing straight into their hands just like we did last season. With a brisk breeze in our faces for the second half we knew it wasn’t going to be easy but if we stayed patient we could win this game. We started the 2nd half much better with good passing and movement and looked a much better side. Then disaster stuck whilst we were pushing for another goal we got mugged by a long ball which the striker latched onto and buried past Pilch in goal. It was now a crucial stage of the game with Windermere sniffing blood so we needed to stay calm and play our game. It was almost as if someone switched on the lights as after the goal we moved the ball about really well and matched the tackles all over the Pitch. We took a deserved lead again through “poacher” Heads who again found himself in the right place to fire in his 2nd of the game. 2.1 United.

Our game got a bit better but Windermere for some reason seems to bring out the worst in our game and we never looked comfortable. That said we managed to get a crucial 3rd goal and there he was again Heads to score a great hat-trick. The last one was the best as he slotted it right into the corner making it 3.1 to United.

We should have now been comfortable but we still didn’t really get going and Windermere always looked good until the final 3rd of the pitch luckily for us!!

United rounded of the game with a great finish from James Scott who has been very unlucky recently. A good move down the left saw the ball delivered to Scott who tucked his shot perfectly past the onrushing goalkeeper. That was Scott’s 11th league goal and now brings him level with Davies as top goal scorers.

Windermere were a constant thorn in our sides but we had done enough to win the game 4.1

Final score united 4 Windermere 1

Not our best afternoon for a while and I think it was a combination of the night out and not playing well after a free week. We dug in and got the result which is always a sign of a good team; on the day we had enough to take the precious 3 home points. We have to learn not to lower ourselves down to other team’s level because when we do we always struggle. The words from the manager just before half time and during may have seemed a little harsh but they had the desired effect. In the 2nd half we played our game and got the reward, last year we fell into this kind of trap and we nearly did today!! Well done boys a hard fought win today!!!!

Man of the match:

This wasn’t a pretty game today and at times we had to battle for the scraps, that meant we had to win the ball in midfield. At times everyone forgets you need a worker in the midfield who isn’t after the glory himself; today we saw that in Andy Johnson. He was everywhere and even though some of it wasn’t pretty his input was defiantly vital for United, he has made himself a permanent fixture in the team and games like today do that cause no harm. Well done Andy great game plus I think you will agree Rob had the best chant in the bus and it will be a memory for all of us forever.

Kendal United away versus Cartmel Reserves Saturday 18th November

Junior Cup Round 2

United travelled to the junior cup holder’s Cartmel on Saturday in what promised to be a tough afternoon. Cartmel looked a very experienced team and straight away they started to moan and winge at the referee. We didn’t start very brightly and only showed small flashes of what we could do; our final ball was just letting us down. Cartmel really pushed early on and it was obvious that there game plan was to hit us early. After we weathered the initial storm our play got better and we started to find space and time to move the ball about. We survived a couple of scares and one saw pilch in goal make a brave save at the striker’s feet. The game was very much in the balance and with only 5 minutes to go before half time we let in a sloppy goal. That said the two strikers were experienced and created space well. A good ball in was headed past pilch making it 1.0 to Cartmel.

We just didn’t switch back on after that goal and we made the error of allowing them a second goal before half time. Again we fell asleep and found ourselves 2.0 down right on half time.

Half time Cartmel 2 United 0

Passion was now required and everyone agreed we hadn’t performed well in the first half and we needed to improve. We got going very well and Cartmel were now on the back foot, we got a deserved goal through Nathan Turner. He collected a through ball and headed for goal; he beat the chasing defender and put a quality finish past the keeper. pegging it back to 2.1

That really stirred us up and with the introduction of Nathan Wooff we really started to have a go at Cartmel. They still continued to moan at the referee and to say they were not a nice team would be an understatement. One of the Cartmel midfielders should have been sent of after a couple of cynical tackles and the referee allowed him to talk him out of it. Just our luck with referees recently he allowed them and their manager to bully him all game. After our goal we allowed them to score what looked likely to be the clincher and again we didn’t defend well. 3.1 To Cartmel. We kept going and a fantastic headed effort from Jason Tucker looked to be going in but hit the bar and went over. I have lost count of how many times Tucker has now been unlucky regarding the woodwork but they are due to go in. Tucker was having a great game and some of his close control and wing play was excellent. We kept plodding away but Cartmel were now throwing bodies in the way of shots and we just couldn’t get our shots away. With 10 minutes to go we gave away a penalty and it was dispatched with power and placement making it 4.1

By now all of the united lads were feeling frustrated and we didn’t look like getting another goal.

Final score Cartmel 4 United 1

A frustrating afternoon and although Cartmel are in the first division of the north lancs league we didn’t get out played. In games like these you are looking for the referee to be strong but he didn’t do that, he allowed them to argue, swear and generally kick us about.  We improved after half time and this game was the perfect warm up for our away game at 2nd placed Shap as long as we learn our lessons from today. Some of our play was excellent and our passing sublime, we need all areas of our game at its best for next weeks 6 pointer.

Man of the match:

One player just kept nagging away at Cartmel and never let them settle, Jason Tucker put in another man of the match performance today, not a good game for being able to express flair but he did. He kept going and taking players on and trying to make things happen right throughout the game. Well done Jason keep it up mate!!

Kendal United versus Staveley United Reserves away Saturday 11th November

Even after a horrible night of rain the pitch at Staveley looked in good condition which was more than can be said for the weather. High winds and driving rain meant this was going to be a tricky fixture. As we started our warm up it was obvious Staveley had taken advantage of their first team game being off and brought in a few recruits accordingly. The united players sensed this and knew we had to be on top of our game to take some points home. We started really well and played some great stuff in the first ten minutes, Jason Tucker and Johnny Brennan where pulling Staveley apart. A couple of good chances came United`s way but either went wide or stuck to the keepers hands like glue. It was in the 7th minute we took a deserved lead through Dan Poss who followed up an effort and managed to slip his shot post the keeper. 1.0 To united. We had a really good grip on the game with our defence looking solid and our attacking play irresistible at times. Both United`s full backs were able to join the attacks making it even harder for the strengthened Staveley to deal with. Just after our goal we had a couple of excellent efforts on goal and James Scott hit a first time shot that cracked against the bar but went safe. We pushed Staveley back and managed to score a second goal through Andy Johnson who collected a loose ball in the box and then fired it past the keeper. 2.0

Chance after chance came United`s way and a stonewall penalty was turned down for united after Scott was obviously brought down but it wasn’t given. We allowed Staveley a 10 minute period just before half time but the united back four were solid especially Paul Rutland who was having a great game.

Half time Staveley 0 united 2

The plan at half time was to keep it the same and put pressure on Staveley from the off. We did this well and all the early play was again dominated by United, then came a moment that changed the game for united. Following a disputed corner that wasn’t given United`s way as everyone turned around and got ready to defend the keepers kick when the referee blew his whistle. He called over a united player and suddenly pulled out a red card, shock was the only word that can state the situation. The referee said this player had sarcastically clapped him therefore it was dissent and he had to go!! You don’t even see that in the premiership and at worst and I mean worst it was a yellow card. So their we were 5 minutes into the second half and down to 10 men and a whole new game needed to be played. The sending off only seemed to affect us for a few minutes and we managed to hold off a mini surge by Staveley. Luckily for united we had 3 excellent substitutes and these guys were going to become very important. That said united carried on as before and a great shot from Mark Barnes-Davis again hit the bar and it just didn’t seem to be our day. The referee by now was seemingly still wound up by it all and gave some poor decisions for both sides. We kept attacking Staveley and even though this caused a few gaps Rutland at the back was superb; he and Captain Rob Warwick were in total control. That partnership is now looking very good as is the all of the back four. At times Rutland was outhinking everyone and made crucial tackles at crucial times, the distribution from the back saw Tucker get lots of the ball and he was doing a great job keeping their defenders busy. Chances came United`s way but we just couldn’t put them away and Scott will feel it wasn’t his day as everything he tried didn’t come off. James is an excellent player and one of these games soon he is going to see all his efforts go in and probably score 5 in one game. The game was well controlled by 10 man united and Staveley managed their only real effort on goal in the 87th minute so again we looked very comfortable.

Thankfully soon after the referee blew his whistle and we could all try to get dry and warm up with an excellent 3 points to take home.

Final score Staveley 0 United 2

Another learning curve for united today and in the long run what happened will be of benefit. That may sound strange but it is one of those situations where as if we have experienced playing with 10 we know we can manage next time. The player who was sent off can consider himself very unlucky and was obviously distraught but chin up lad and don’t worry; those who were there knew it was unjust. We controlled the game and our football throughout was excellent so well done lads and that’s exactly half our league season gone and maximum points taken. We mustn’t now be complacent or we will lose our momentum plus we need to remember teams are approaching us differently and want to be the first to beat us!!

Man of the match:

It was an afternoon of poor weather and this meant it was going to be a potential banana skin. One player who has experience of these types of games is Paul Rutland and today he was outstanding. He attacked the ball cleared when in danger but when presented with a little time picked out some great passes. You can see he is now starting to settle into the team and it was a sign of things to come from him, well done rutty top game today mate!!

Kendal United versus Dent reserves Saturday 4th November

United entertained Dent on Saturday looking to maintain momentum in the league. We started fairly slowly and the early exchanges saw both sides nullify each other, United had a couple of good half chances but they didn’t hit the target. Rob Warwick managed to join in a couple of attacks and saw two good chances go begging as he just couldn’t direct the headers downwards. Dent had a couple of good moves but nothing to worry pilch in goal, as we settled the ball was more often that not in the Dent half. Our patience and probing were now starting to pay dividends as Dent really struggled to keep up with our one and two touch play. Good work down the right saw the ball come to James Scott who managed to beat the first defender but was then brought down by the second. Warwick stepped up and confidently beat the keeper 1.0 to United. We relaxed a bit after that and some of our play was excellent and it was causing Dent lots of problems. Jason Tucker was having a great game and most of United`s good forward play went through him. Tucker sensed he had the beating of his man and following a fine run to the touchline he delivered a perfect ball to Scott who tucked it away 2.0.

Our play was a bit sporadic but a definite improvement from the past couple of games, good play at the back meant United could attack safe in the knowledge we had them covered. Paul Rutland was imperious at the back and he never looked in danger plus he won some great headers. A couple more chances came our way but weren’t taken, Dan Poss`s afternoon was ended just before half time as he chased a ball right to the keeper and then caught his knee as he slid in. it wasn’t a major cut but certainly enough to end his participation.

Half time United 2 Dent 0

We started the 2nd half brightly but it was starting to become clear the referee was having a poor afternoon; he seemed to want to be the main event. A great chance fell to Nathan Turner who got a surprise start replacing the injured Dan, had it been later in the half he would have buried it but it didn’t run for him. The referee made a couple of daft decisions and got out the cards rather than deal with the situation. That said it was all United and we missed a couple of half chances before we finally got our deserved 3rd goal. Good work upfront from Scott saw him make space to fire a shot but it was blocked, it fell kindly for ex Dent player Andy Johnson to fire home a goal which he certainly seemed to enjoy. 3.0.

Pilch in goal by now was becoming a spectator and all he had to do thus far was punch one and collect a few balls. Our dominance continued but we were guilty at times of lowering our play to there level. Nathan Woof returned for his second game and replaced the hard working Nick Heads, he was given the task of injecting some pace into the game. That he started doing well and the ball was finding the strikers a bit quicker. Out of nowhere United scored our fourth goal, Turner collected a ball some 35 yards out and pushed a bit closer to goal before unleashing a fantastic left foot shoot right into the top corner. What a goal it was and he was subsequently mobbed by his team mates, 4.0 to United, Tucker on the right never gave them a moments peace and I bet there right back was having nightmares when he saw Jason running at him again.

That wasn’t to be the last of the excitement for the afternoon as soon after the goal we were awarded a very soft penalty. I am not sure if Warwick was being kind but his effort flew over the bar so justice was eventually done. Scott had another great effort blocked on the line and Turner cracked another beauty but this time it hit the post and went across the whole goal but not into the net. We pushed and harried but the referee was making a mess of the game which was a shame as it ruined it all a bit. Pilch in goal had no shots to save for the whole 90 minutes so it gives a good indication of how comfortable a win this was.

Final score united 4 Dent 0

The lads did what was asked of them today, we needed to build our play and attacks better ready fro when we meet the top teams again. Good all round play saw United dominate a team and agreed we should have scored more but the play is looking much better. We must keep up this hard work ethic as we approach the half way stage of the season this Saturday, if we do it will make us hard to beat!!

Man of the match:

Two players had cracking games but Tucker on the wing was irresistible today and his excellent touch, movement and passing was fantastic. He has now learnt when to put the ball in and I am sure the strikers really appreciate his effort and quality balls. Well done Jason a much deserved man of the match today.

Kendal United versus Burneside “A” away Saturday 28th October

With all the rain during the week this game was a doubt on Saturday but the pitch actually looked quite good considering. We knew this was going to be a tough fixture as Burneside gave us loads of problems last year. We started slowly and allowed Burneside lots of the ball and just couldn’t get our game going, they seemed to want the ball more than us. At times we really didn’t do our basics well enough and Burneside took a deserved lead. A deep corner floated to the back post and there was the striker unmarked and he made no mistake 1.0 to Burneside. We didn’t get much better and only a top draw save from Andrew Thoburn in goal kept them from scoring a second. We got a little better and at least managed to get some shots in on goal, Burneside managed to reduce us to long shots that weren’t troubling the keeper. Against the run of play we managed to grab an equaliser and it was a well taken goal by Johnny Brennan who collected the ball in the box and buried his shot deep into the corner. 1.1

We huffed and puffed throughout the whole first half and at times our defending was bordering madness. We gave them far too many chances to attack us and we lacked ideas going forward. A welcome half time whistle gave us a chance to re group and plan a way forward.

Half time 1.1

We needed to get the balls down the wing and avoid the sticky middle part of the pitch, we have an excellent outlet in Jason Tucker and he wasn’t being used. Also we needed to get closer to them and play our game not theirs, and my word we started like a new team. We created 3 good chances in the first 5 minutes and pinned Burneside back, it was felt a goal was going to come. The next goal was crucial and it came to united from an unusual source, Lorne Poss made a great run down the right and following good play with Tucker he cracked a shot right across the goal into the far corner making it 2.1 to united. Now we settled and played our football, Burneside didn’t have an answer and we knew we were fitter and stronger and this proved to be the case. Another great move down the right saw Tucker lose his marker and deliver a low ball into the box for the onrushing Nick Heads to easily slot past the keeper. 3.1

Burneside in no way were out of it and still kept hustling and harrying   all over the park, one move saw another cracking save from Thoburn. He had no right to get anywhere near a low headed shot and it looked certain to creep in but he got down and put it past the post. James Scott had a couple of great chances but it just wouldn’t go in for him, much to his credit he kept going and fired in a great effort that beat the keeper all ends up, 4.1 to united. We kept pushing and the game never seemed to slow and Burneside were still battling hard for every ball and this was proving to be the tough encounter we expected. They managed to pull a goal back and make it 4.2 and there was still another 10 minutes to go so we had to concentrate. We did make mistakes and gave away a couple of free kicks in dangerous areas but they thankfully weren’t taken well. We had a couple of chances to get more goals but it wasn’t to be and too Burnsides credit they made us work our socks off today. What seemed to be the longest ever half was finally ended by the referees whistle.

Full time Burneside 2 united 4

This was a really tough test for United today and agreed conditions didn’t suit our game but we made it hard work in the first half. Credit due for the second half because we really upped our game and forced Burneside back with some excellent wing play. We have to remember at times to do the simple things well and that has been our problem over the past couple of weeks. We have now played 7 and won 7 but today this was a crucial win to maintain our slender lead at the top of the league.

Man of the match:

Due to our good form our keepers have had a very easy start to the season but today was very different. Thorbs in goal was called upon early on and he stepped up to the challenge and gave a very confident performance. Two excellent saves and his catching on a wet day was first class so well done Thorbs a much deserved man of the match today.

Kendal United versus Stavely Reserves

United entertained Staveley on Saturday in the junior cup first round hoping to keep our fine form going. Dan Poss had a rare start up front as Olly was missing due to injury which is hoped will clear for our league game next week. We started unusually slow and allowed Staveley a couple of decent half chances, one went just over the bar and one hit the bar!! We could and should have gone a couple of goals up but excellent keeping from the young goalie kept the score 0.0 after 15 minutes. We had now woken up and were creating chance after chance but couldn’t quite find the finish. Good movement saw united pull stavely around but we lacked our usual rhythm and touch on the ball and this allowed them to stop our attacks. We deservedly went ahead on the 25 minute mark with good follow up play seeing nick heads sneak in at the back post to bury a great parry from the keeper making it 1.0.

This settled us down a bit but we still weren’t fluent and this gave Staveley a little glimmer of hope. Quite how we missed some chances is a mystery but at least we where creating them regularly. We soon went 2 up through Poss as he ghosted in at the back post to put his header firmly past the keeper making it 2.0 to united. Our play got a bit better and it wasn’t long before we went further ahead, James Scott collected a great pass and ran on then emphatically beat the keeper with a great finish making it 3.0 to united.

A couple of good chances fell United`s way but for various reasons we couldn’t add to our tally.

Half time united 3 stavely 0

We needed to be a bit calmer 2nd half and within the first 5 minutes had a couple of good chances and 4 corners but again we couldn’t find the net. By now it was all united and our keeper was a virtual spectator, heads and Andy Johnson in midfield were being given time and space to pick out passes. Good work and touch play down the right from Jason Tucker gave united much needed room but we just didn’t find the net.

We kept probing away and eventually got the 4th goal through dogged work from heads who shot through a crowded area to claim his second of the match and United`s 4th.

After this we again stepped up a gear but our luck was epitomised by a great effort from Scott that beat the keeper all ends up but struck the post and was just too far away for Poss to prod home. Even when the keeper made a mistake and presented united with an open goal we managed somehow to miss it so this was summing up United`s afternoon. Graeme Archer and Liam Poss who were both back for the weekend got on in the final 20 minutes and it was great to see them, a more comfortable game to give them a run we couldn’t have hoped for.  We scored a 5th goal through a penalty and this was put away comfortably by Rob Warwick making it 5.0 with 10 minutes to go. In all honesty we could and should have gone on to score more but it wasn’t going to happen today so we were happy to settle a very average game with a clean sheet and 5 goals.

Final score united 5 Staveley 0

What a strange game this was as we had so many chances and the score line could have been massive but it was a workman like performance. We ended up playing there game a bit and have to learn not to lower our standards as this is what they want us to do!! It shows have far we have travelled when every player left the pitch a little disappointed even though we had won so comfortably.

As is typical of our cup draws this season we have now drawn the holders cartmell reserves away on the 18th of November so that will be a challenge to relish.

Man of the match:

Strange as it may sound there were not many candidates this week but one player put a massive amount of effort in and that was Nick Heads, he ran all day and got himself on the score sheet and it was a shame he didn’t complete his hat trick. I have worked with Nicky before and I know there is a lot more to come but well done today Nick.

Kendal United versus Coniston Reserves Saturday 14th October

After travelling to Coniston last week we faced the reserves at home this Saturday hoping to maintain our league form. Disruption to plans started in the morning so this saw Nick Heads fill in at centre half for the late arriving Rob Warwick. Andy Johnson had been ill all morning and was a doubt to start but he started the game much to his credit. We hoped to start fast and put them under pressure from the start, we did this perfectly as a great cross got just enough connection from Johnson to beat the keeper making the score 1.0 after 7 minutes. We looked like we were going to go on and dominate the game but we didn’t quite get going. We probed and pushed but it seemed we were trying too hard to force the play and this caused great frustration on and off the pitch. Coniston managed to get a foot hold in the game as we were not quite firing on all cylinders. We had control of the match but poor decision making meant we were a little rushed and this allowed Coniston the odd foray forward. Coniston managed to pull a goal back after half an hour and they deserved there goal. 1.1We started again and looked much more menacing and only the bar stopped a fantastic free kick from Dan Poss which would have been a goal of the season contender had it gone in. James Scott was unlucky not to get a goal after his goal bound shot hit the back of the defender on the line and was cleared to safety. Soon after we were awarded a penalty after an obvious push in the back. Scott stepped up and calmly slotted the ball away making it 2.1 united. Both Poss and mark Barnes were having excellent games and a lot of our good play went through them and again excellent hold up play from Olly Davies allowed us to build. A couple of fine saves from the young Coniston keeper kept them in the game at half time.

Half time united 2 coniston1

We needed to calm down a bit at half time and not force the play as we were starting to get frustrated in front of goal. Rob Warwick came on for young ash Duffuss and took his place alongside the improving Paul Rutland. As like the first half we created chance after chance and kept Coniston pinned back but still couldn’t get the ball into the net. Coniston relied heavily on the long ball from the back and we had to be alert to this and remain switched on at the back which we did well.

By now it was all united and our 3rd goal came from Davies after a good period of play saw him break free down the left, he wasted no time in firing a hard drive into the opposite corner to make the game safe for united 3.1.

Another fine effort from Poss saw him hit a curling drive that again bounced back off the bar to safety. It wasn’t to be his day in front of goal as the keeper pulled off a fine save just after much to his frustration. We were now dominant in all areas and with better decision making we should have been out of sight. The team were left in no uncertain terms from the manager as to why we weren’t further ahead as we were trying to walk the ball in rather than get the shot off and not giving the ball to the strikers fast enough. Chance after chance came United`s way and a mixture of good goalkeeping or bad luck kept the score line down. We kept probing away and managed to get a fourth goal through Davies who came in from the wing and rather than pass just went past the defenders and buried his shot through the crowded area making it 4.1 to united.

It was probably United`s ugliest goal all season but it didn’t matter as we deserved to be that far ahead. Coniston never tested Thoburn in goal for the whole second half and apart from the odd mistake at the back they never really troubled us all game. Jason Tucker and Scott both had good efforts but that was to be the last goal of the game as united ran out comfortable 4.1 winners.

Final score united 4 Coniston reserves 1

This was a strange game as we dominated it so much but just couldn’t get the ball into the net, we wanted a bit too much time on the ball and didn’t release it quick enough at times. Had we had better luck we could have had a lot more goals. That said it was another great 3 points and keeps our league form running along nicely. We return to cup action next week in the junior so let’s hope our good form continues ready for the league game the week after. Well done lads a good result but I am sure you will all agree we can play better and much smarter than we did today.

Man of the match:

There where two outstanding displays today and Mark Davis can feel a little upset it isn’t him but he was just outshone by Dan Poss. Poss is fast becoming a top young player and he gives everything each week, his running on and off the ball plus his shots on goal just won it for him. Another top display Dan so well done man of the match 2 weeks running and that is excellent

Kendal United v Northbank Carlisle Res. Senior Cup

Saturday 30th September 2006

Kendal United had a break from league action today with Northbank Carlisle being the visitors. Northbank are a decent first division outfit and United were looking forward to the experience of playing first division opposition.

United had some obvious big players missing for one reason or another, leaving no natural centre half left to call upon. Liam Poss made the long journey home to help with the situation and Nick Heads had to move from his usual midfield position to centre half alongside Liam. A last minute change also saw Mark Barnes-Davis have to pull out due to an injury picked up in the morning seeing young Ashley Duffuss make his full debut and leaving United with only one regular back four to call upon.

Northbank started strong and physical as expected and United could not get the ball under control from the off. United were told to play pressing football and no more than two touches before moving it on when in possession but this was difficult when you do not have the ball. The back four were struggling to get to know each other in the first 20 minutes and this led to Northbank well taken first after only five minutes. A second was added by Northbank after ten by there good play and through ball which the returning Thorburn could do nothing about.

A quick tactical change saw Olly Davies fall back into midfield to try and win the ball and pushing James Scott (captain in Robs absence) up as the sole striker and Dan Poss supporting when ever possible. Andy Johnson had to pull on all his training and experience to try and get some control of midfield as Northbank were running the show, being able to vary their play so much it was difficult to have any idea what was coming next. Usually in the fourth division you can workout how a team plays within the first 15 mins and adapt accordingly, but this was a quality first division side that also knew how to get digs in when the ref was not looking, with Johnson, Scott, Andrew Thoburn and Jason Tucker all feeling the worst of it.

United now started getting some control of the game and Northbank had to resort to clearing the ball with long balls straight to Thoburn. Thoburn was looking like having to come off after a bad challenge from the Northbank forward leaving stud marks right down his leg. It seemed as if I was never off the pitch dealing with bad tackles. Young Ash was getting better and better as the game went on with strong tackles and good clearances. However Northbank took a very quick intelligent free kick to put a third past united with 10 seconds to go to half time.

Half Time United 0 Northbank 3

The half time team talk saw everybody disappointed with the score line, letting a goal in 10 seconds to half time is never a way to finish a half. The emphasis was to tighten it up and spread the ball a little more as United were getting a little dragged into the play which allowed Northbank to play their game and we knew if we play our game we get on the score sheet.

The second half got underway with united on the back foot again with Northbank not happy to sit on their lead. Thoburn was called upon very early to save a certain goal by diverting a great shot onto the bar. The resulting corner saw an even better save from Thoburn saving a shot from the edge of the area which he had no right to get to, pushing it from right in the top corner for another corner. This was just what United needed with Davies and Johnson seeing more of the ball spraying it well to the wings that were being supported well by the fullbacks. However the Northbank back line always seemed to have the answers with the last ball.

United were then caught on the back foot after 70 mins and conceding a free kick about thirty yards out. The resulting free kick saw Northbank hit a shot any player would be proud of, with the ball moving at lightning pace and with swerve they bent it around the wall and gave Thoburn, although he did get a hand to it and it went in of the underside of the bar, no chance. Northbank added a fifth with five minutes to go from open play after a bit of pressure from United which saw sub Kevin Kitchington almost score with a good header from Tuckers excellent cross, but getting caught too high up the field.

Final Score

United 0 Northbank 5

A fine display from all in Richards absence all should take this as a great learning experience the score line was a bit flattering for Northbank however and did not display the battling performance you all put in, in difficult circumstances. This experience should set us up well for next week and another good first division outfit. Hold your heads up high and be proud of the way you represented the club with your battling display and how you all competed in every area of the park with some of the best players in the county.

Man of the Match.

There were a lot of fine displays but Young Ash won it for me with this being his début and against first division opposition, playing at left back pushed on well and got in some great strong tackles against big opposition often breaking down Northbank play. Well done Ash

Coniston versus Kendal United Saturday 7th October Benevolent Trophy Round 1

What a draw for United after playing Northbank Carlisle last week the prospect of facing Coniston’s first team on there home turf was not a bright one. For some strange reason we didn’t train well in our first session on the astro turf on Thursday and the boys where reminded of the importance of training before kick off in no uncertain terms.

That said the lads were up for it and again we had a couple of regulars missing in the shape of Olly Davies and Andy Johnson who have both been immense thus far so we knew it was going to be extra tough.

The game started at a furious pace but we more than matched them early on in every department and our one touch game was looking very neat and tidy. Coniston didn’t settle and we kept at them by making them make poor decisions we kept them on the back foot. It was incredible how well we settled and started to play our football, their gaffer was going nuts and no wonder as we were actually outplaying them. There were scary moments for United as we expected but each time we dealt with the threat well even if it wasn’t always pretty. Excellent running off the ball by James Scott and Ashley Duffuss meant we managed to maintain possession in their half. This was really important and it allowed united to build confidence and the score remained 0.0 after 30 minutes. One of our best chances came from Scott as he chased a bouncing ball and was just about to connect when he was clattered by the keeper, both took a knock but the resulting free kick didn’t trouble Coniston. We lived on the seat of our pants at times and one great effort from a Coniston player hit the underside of the bar and thankfully went to safety. A golden moment fell to Jason Tucker a few minutes before the break but he didn’t get his shot away when he had plenty of time to do so. They had a couple of good moments but united deserved to go into the break holding them and that is what we did.

Half time 0.0.

The plan was to try to keep frustrating them and attack when we could using our wing outlet but keep close to them. The second half started with a now more confident united passing the ball around well and matching Coniston tackles. It was at times and this is no word of a lie hard to tell who the first division side were. Amazingly it was United who took the lead after good play down the left, the cross made its way to Tucker who turned and hit it with his weaker left foot and it flew past the keeper. It was a much deserved goal for United who had more than matched there lofty opponents thus far. The goal really annoyed Coniston and their tails were up as was there language and dodgy tackling. We had been warned and it was such a shame to let in a sloppy goal from a corner and that brought the game back level. 1.1.

We kept battling but Coniston didn’t let up and sensed blood so they kept pushing us back, we did try to counter attack and it certainly wasn’t all over at this stage. That said the next 5 minutes saw Coniston mount 3 good attacks and they managed to sneak another goal from a set piece which we again didn’t defend particularly well. 2.1. What happened next was very unusual as Coniston decided not to attack and try to hold what they had, this was epitomised by the Coniston striker holding the ball in our corner and seemingly looking to waste time. (What a compliment this was to United as they did seem very worried we might equalise)

We kept going with the irrepressible Lorne Poss and Dan Poss who were fighting hard for the cause. Dan was having a superb game against a very experienced midfield from Coniston. What finished our afternoon was the killer third goal from Coniston and again it could and should have been defended better but that’s the way it goes against top teams. 3.1.

We tried hard right up Until the final whistle but our hopes were dashed by the referee’s whistle.

Final score Coniston 3 united 1

What a game of football from a young United side, we battled harried and matched a team some 30 places above us in the league. We played again with style and movement that even an experienced and well drilled team such as Coniston found it hard to cope with. Myself and Simon had to pinch ourselves at 1.0 just to make sure it was really happening but my word we deserved to be in front. Inexperience got us in the end but every United player played a massive part today and should be very very proud of themselves. Let’s now take this momentum and continue to play like this in our remaining league and cup games and see where we get too!!

Man of the match:

A really tough one this week as every player deserved a special mention but one player did exactly what was asked of him for the whole 90 minutes. Dan Poss had an unselfish afternoon and was everywhere on the pitch. One second he was harrying someone and the next making himself available to receive the pass. When he got the ball he used it well but the real mark of the lad was when he received a nasty tackle he bit his lip and walked away like a man and carried on hurting them with his play. There was a moment in the match when a Coniston player broke free and headed down the wing and guess who was there chasing him some 60 yards…….Danny so that’s why he is my man of the match. Well done lad you were quality.

Kendal united versus Kendal Celtic away Saturday 23rd September

Kendal united versus Kendal Celtic away Saturday 23rd September

United travelled to the new jubilee pitches on Saturday to face Celtic in what promised to be a cracking game. We had lost both games by a margin last year so we were looking for an improvement and hoped our good form would continue. As expected Celtic were a strong and tall side and are renowned for being good on the ball. We started a bit twitchy and didn’t clear our lines well with some poor passing and decision making. For the first 30 minutes Celtic dominated the game and had a couple of decent half chances, we were a yard off the pace and were being beaten in most areas of the pitch. United had a debutant keeper in goal with the midweek signing of “pilch” from Windermere and he came out well early on to collect the ball at feet. Slowly but surely we started to come into the game, we had the best effort of the half thus far. A good ball was played into the box which Dan Poss connected really well with but it smacked the post and went safe. Both United wingers were now getting a bit of joy and the keeper had to deal with a couple of efforts but they were straight at him. Johnny Brennan got free a couple of times but couldn’t get into the right position to get any power in his efforts. The last few minutes of the half saw united turn Celtic around and start to put pressure on their back four. Our passing to feet was now excellent and you could see the confidence grow amongst the lads. Celtic earlier composure was diminishing and there defenders were putting the ball out of play a lot giving united a chance to move up.

Half time 0.0

The chat at half time was to keep playing our game and to bring the ball down quicker and challenge quicker which would reduce Celtics time on the ball. We started well and clicked into our groove with good movement and passing which was making Celtic defend far deeper in there own half. James Scott and Olly Davies up front were now causing Celtic lots of grief and the former nearly put united ahead. He broke free and collected a loose ball and charged towards the keeper, at the last second he fired a low drive which hit the base of the post and again went safe. Both full backs were also joining attacks, its good to see two smaller players really matching some of the big guys in the division so well. Lorne Poss and Mark Davis are so consistent each week and always perform to a high standard. We were enjoying our best period of the game and our invention was great to watch. Celtic were very much in the game and always looked dangerous on the break but Both Warwick and Rutland we both having a dominant half. A goal looked like coming and it was a great goal to break the deadlock. Davies received the ball with his back to goal and then managed to turn the defender and chip the onrushing goalkeeper with a composed finish. 1.0 united. It was much deserved as we had controlled the half really well and played some good stuff. We were defending well and with 15 minutes to go you could sense Celtic were tired and starting to run out of ideas. Against the run of play Celtic capitalised on a defensive lapse that firstly led to a corner, then the ball wasn’t cleared from the area and a grateful Celtic player slotted the ball away. 1.1 Pilch in goal hardly had a thing to do second half and could do nothing about it and this was a major blow. There wasn’t a lot of time to go but we didn’t panic and kept probing and also defended the last forays by Celtic well. Credit to our spirit we picked ourselves up and attacked Celtic with all our remaining energy and got the winning goal we deserved. Scott in the box created space and fired a low shot which looped off the defenders leg and floated over the keeper, this was met with a massive roar by all supporting united 2.1. The goal was fortuitous certainly but we had done enough in the game to deserve to be ahead. We kept going and it was amazing to see every united player still want the ball and create chances right up until the well received final whistle. This was a massive result for us and shows how far we have travelled in a short space of time. Credit to both teams the game was played in an excellent spirit for such an important game and the referee had a very easy afternoon.

Full time Kendal Celtic 1 Kendal United 2

As the score line suggest this was a tight game and both sides didn’t hold back and attacked and harried all game. We can’t match Celtic for size or experience but we can match them with our passing and movement and that shone through today. Last season we didn’t get close to beating Celtic and they were the only team we didn’t get points from so it really is a top result. The result means we have now won our opening 5 fixtures scoring an amazing 23 goals in the process but even more impressive is only shipping 7 goals. We can’t sit back on our laurels and we have to work extra hard now to keep the momentum going. Two tough first division sides next for united in the next couple of weeks and these games are going to be good for our experience gathering. Well done lads a top start to the season so let’s keep up the good work and enjoy our football!!

Man of the match

Everybody worked there socks off today and are a real credit to there club but one player just performed to that higher level. Andy Johnson again had a top game and once settled began to get tackles in everywhere and win crucial headers. His work rate was very evident and he always wanted the ball, he is a really nice lad but has had to learn to not be nice on the pitch. That said he rarely puts in a bad tackle and has improved 100% and deserves the man of the match today.

Kendal united versus shap reserves September 16th September

United entertained Shap on Saturday in what promised to be a tough encounter.

As it happened it was an early top of the table clash with both teams winning their opening games. As usual Shap looked a strong physical side and after our tussles last year we knew what to expect.

United started unusually slow and allowed Shap to win the early balls and even pick up the scrappy second balls. We started to get going and we dealt with the constant aerial bombardment well and worked hard not to give away free kicks in our half. Shap had a lot of the ball but weren’t really threatening the Kendal goal, good hands by Andrew Thoburn in goal gave the back four confidence. Close to the 15 minute mark and against the run of play united scored a great counter attacking goal. Good work down the right by Jason Tucker and Lorne Poss saw the latter deliver a cracking ball which was controlled then buried with a crisp finish by Olly Davies. Davies is having a cracking start to the season and his finish was sublime. Johnny Brennan who returned to the team today after working so hard in training was having a great game up the left wing with his creative football. Johnny didn’t get a shirt a couple of weeks ago for tactical reasons and a credit to him he took it on the chin and when selected today he gave the perfect response. Soon after the goal we had a goal chalked off as Tucker broke the offside trap and went on to score then the referee gave the goal but then changed his mind and ruled it offside. Shap were a constant threat in the air and good work by Paul Rutland, Rob Warwick and both full backs they kept them at bay. They did manage to hit the bar and Thoburn made a couple of good saves so it wasn’t an easy half by any means but it finished 1.0 to United.

Half time united 1 Shap 0

The second half started in a similar vein with fast tempo football and Shap managed to catch us napping to pull the game back level 1.1. It was now Shap who had the ball and united showed patience and didn’t panic just kept working and trying to make it click.

The next goal was going to be crucial and it was united who scored it, good running by Andy Johnson saw him break into the box and fire a cool finish past the diving goalkeeper. 2.1.

The game was still tight but it was united who stared to take a grip although that said it was by no means comfortable. A change was made and Dan Poss returned to midfield as he had been covering for Scott eho had family commitments and Nathan Turner got the unusual role as a striker supporting Davies. This worked a treat and Dan in midfield proved his worth to the team by adapting instantly with good tackles and intelligent balls. Davies scored his second after a period of sustained pressure and again it was an accomplished finish giving the keeper no chance. 3.1

Shap kept working and never let up but united just relaxed and played some great football. Tucker on the right and the excellent Johnny Brennan were causing panic with there running and movement and this was very evident late on as we started pick Shap apart. Turner then got in on the act after a great cross he was there at the far post to head United`s fourth goal of the game. Turner did very well to take the awkward ball and head it goal bound making the score a comfortable 4.1

The final 10 minutes was all united and Turner was unlucky on two further occasions and one effort would have been a contender for goal of the season but his cracking drive beat the keeper ends up but thumped back off the post. Anyone who sees Turner train or play regular will tell you he has a cracking left peg and in the next 12 months he could and should mature into one of the best young players in the league.

Game over for Shap and in the end the result was fairly comfortable and was another mature and hardworking win for united

Final score united 4 Shap 1

United again played the patience game today and the fitness and technique shone through throughout. This hard work and team ethic has to continue now as we are on top of the tree and there to be “scalped” plus with some tough first division sides fast approaching in the cups we need to stay sharp and fit. Both the last two games have prepared us well to meet Kendal Celtic who I am sure are looking forward to playing united. It promises to be a good game on the new jubilee pitches on Saturday.

Man of the match:

Again a few contenders this week but one player had a top afternoon; Andrew Thoburn in goal was excellent. His domination of his box, kicking and catching were superb and it was the type of performance you need against a tall physical side like Shap A top performance Andrew well done!!

This Saturday saw another departure by one of our long standing loyal players. Liam Poss is off to Manchester met university this week and he will be missed by everyone. We wish him luck and again I would like to thank him for his effort and hard work over the last year, he is one of the funniest guys you are ever likely to meet and gives as good as he gets so we will miss his mad banter. Good luck mate and enjoy yourself it will only be a couple of weeks and he will be back to help out for holiday cover. And for the last time its DAN or even DANNY…………….Ha Ha!!

Kendal United versus Greystoke Reserves away

This fixture is one that all managers in every league dreads, Greystoke have a tiny pitch and are probably the most physical team in the division. Last season we started poorly and never recovered so the team talk was about staying tight for the first 10 minutes. It was a hot day and the pitch was in great condition so it was hoped we could play our game.

What a start for United, Greystoke kicked off and made a couple of passes and bang they scored. This goal was scored in an amazing 6 seconds after kick off and had to be seen to be believed. 1.0 Greystoke. United took a good 10 minutes to recover from this and start to play our game, which we did well considering there tails were up and looking to deliver a couple of knock out blows.

Good work by the strikers and Jason Tucker meant we were staring to turn there defence around and cause them problems.

On the quarter hour mark we equalised through James Scott who fired a great shot from inside the box that flew into the top right-hand corner. 1.1

It was us who now had the bit between our teeth and Greystoke were really struggling to keep up with our pace and movement. A few minutes later Dan Poss put United in front with a shot that completely fooled the keeper. He came in from the touchline and the keeper expected a shot across him but Dan went for the near post and sneaked it in making the score 2.1 to United.

We were now in control and Greystoke started to argue with every decision and with each other which was music to our ears. United were now creating chances on a regular basis and there defenders couldn’t live with our attacking play. We went further ahead through Olly Davies; he turned in the box and curled a fine effort past the keeper’s far post which nestled into the back of the net. 3.1

As the half drew to a close we were all over them and could have gone further ahead but their keeper was no mug and kept them in the game.

Half time 3.1 to United

As expected Greystoke flew back at us and managed again to score virtually from the kick off, it took them 30 seconds to find the net from the re-start.

This inspired them and they threw the kitchen sink at us for long periods, we had to battle hard now as there strength and character began to make it a harder afternoon than we expected. Greystoke pushed and shoved wherever possible and bombed our box with deep balls which we defended ok at times but other times we looked sloppy.

Our fine play in the first half had all but disappeared but we had the odd attack and a fine effort from Scott skimmed the bar. Davies up front was doing a fine job holding the ball up which allowed us some breathing space. Changes were made and players were sacrificed for the cause as it was now a case of defending what we have. They must have had 10 corners in a 15 minute period but we kept getting it away by hook or by crook. It wasn’t pretty but showed that we have matured and have the strength now to battle. With a few minutes to go the game was sealed by Scott who got on the end of a great ball and raced towards the keeper, he calmly slipped it past him to everyone’s relief making the score 4.2.

Soon after the referee blew for full time much to anyone supporting United`s relief.

Final score Greystoke 2 United 4

This really was a battle today and every ounce of strength and character was required by United to take 3 points away. Greystoke are a tough set of lads and some of the verbal and physical stuff has no place in football but there manager is the worst culprit so they aren’t set a good example!!

This time last year we would have lost today but it shows how far we have come in the last 12 months. Congratulations to every player in United`s colours today, you were made to work extremely hard in hot conditions against a wise and at times brutal Greystoke outfit. It’s impossible to name each player in the report but I can say you all did yourselves and me proud so well done!!!

Man of the match:

One player today performed so well in difficult conditions and his hold up play and finishing were there for all to see. Olly Davies who joined us in the summer had a cracking game and worked tirelessly for the cause. I worked with Olly when he was 16 and he is looking as good now as he was then, which is a credit to him. The lads can now see I have made a quality signing bringing Olly to our club and long may his form continue.

Kendal United versus Staveley reserves Saturday 2nd September

United entertained Staveley on what was a truly horrible day, at lunchtime it was decided to play even though we knew there first team had called there game off. It is unfair teams can use players from the higher divisions but that’s life in the Westmorland League I am afraid so we just have to put up with it.

The game stared fast with both teams struggling with the weather conditions which were causing the ball to skid across the surface. United showed good early play and invention again as last week Jason Tucker on the wing was delivering killer balls, a good couple of chances fell to various players but the keeper wasn’t tested.

Staveley were very physical and one tackle cut right through Liam Poss`s boot leaving him with a bloody foot. The size and strength of Staveley caused problems for United who were playing into the wind and driving rain first half. Andy Johnson in midfield was having another fine game which saw him cover every blade of grass. Olly Davies should have put united ahead but he couldn’t squeeze his shot past the keeper. James Scott and Nick Heads both went close but hitting the target was a problem for United. With half an hour played Staveley took the lead with a goal out of the top drawer, a ball was played into the box and the lad overhead kicked it over Andrew Thoburn in goal who had no chance making it 1.0. Graeme Archer went on a great run and rounded the keeper only for him to snatch it back as he was about to shoot.

United huffed and puffed for the remainder of the half, and certainly started to show signs of frustration.

Half time United 0 Staveley 1

The team talk at half time was to stay patient and get the ball onto the deck and pass it about to try and unlock the stavely defence.

We were a different team second half and the passing game was pulling Staveley out of position regularly, our movement was fantastic and you could see the equaliser coming. It wasn’t long into the half when Scott found time and space to bury his shot into the far corner making it 1.1.

This fired United up and it was Scott again who fired in low drive to give United the lead 2.1. Tails we now up and Staveley were struggling to get out of the own half as united turned the screws on them. Davies up front was now looking to get in on the act and he scored one of his trademark goals, the keeper came out towards him but was given no chance as Davies slotted it past him 3.1

That goal gave Davies the confidence he needed and it wasn’t long before he scored his second and United`s 4th, he picked up a loose ball and fired it home past the keeper making the score 4.1

With both strikers now on 2 a piece they were looking to complete hat tricks, their movement and control was great to see. Dan Poss came on and he made an instant difference with his long and short passing, he and Johnson were now pulling all the strings. United defence were now pretty much in control and only had to deal with the odd foray forward by a now tiring Staveley. Davies completed his hat trick with a quarter of an hour to go with another crisp finish making the score 5.1

Chances were created regularly but the job had been done today as the referee blew for time.

Final score United 5 Staveley 1

We didn’t quite get into our groove first half but with calming words and determination all over the pitch we soon shone through and completely controlled the second half. Staveley brought 4 first team players and they certainly made a difference but we kept going and that’s a credit to the lads.

All at the club would like to wish Graeme Archer all the best for the future as he heads of to Stirling University next week. He is a popular lad and I am sure he will enjoy the Scottish hospitality (not too much tho I hope ha ha). From the managers point of view I would like to thank him for his loyalty and efforts over the past 12 months as he has been a pleasure to work with. I am sure we will see him back in a United shirt in the future when he visits home, good luck mate!!!

Man of the match:

Again there were strong performances all over the pitch but one player worked his socks off and seemed to be everywhere. Andy Johnson who joined us mid season last year had a top afternoon and you can really see the difference our training has made to Andy’s game. That said he has made it happen himself with lots of hard work and really looks like he is enjoying his football, a top display today so well done to Andy and keep up the good work.

Pre Season

United started the pre-season early this year and managed to squeeze in four games against teams from the higher divisions.

The results were as follows:

Penrith Academy 2 Kendal United 2

Kendal United 6 Ullswater 1

Kirkby Lonsdale reserves 1 Kendal United 5

Penrith Rangers 1 Kendal United 3

Although not much is read into pre-season these are a cracking set of results against tough opposition. This also allowed our new signings a good run out and a chance to fit into our system of play. These results were also gained without the club captain Glen McNichol who has yet to play this season due to work commitments.

This seasons new signings are:

Olly Davies formerly of Keswick Reserves

Nick heads also from Keswick Reserves

Alistair Wilson from United`s under 16`s

Paul Rutland from Braithwaite

These players are added to a strong looking squad of 20 players for the new season.

With continued support from Beech Hill tracksuits have been purchased for all of these players plus a substantial amount of new training equipment was purchased.

We are all hoping for a good second season for the senior team

Kendal United versus Endmoor Reserves Saturday 26th August

United`s first league game saw them make the short journey down to Endmoor on Saturday. The game kicked off in glorious sunshine but this soon disappeared as heavy rain arrived right on cue a few minutes into the new season.

United started brightly and didn’t allow Endmoor any time to settle on the ball forcing them back towards there own goal. This pressure soon paid off and new signing Olly Davies opened his and the teams account for the season. An excellent ball allowed Davies time to pick his spot past the onrushing goalkeeper which he did well. 1.0

This spurred united on and soon after Nick Heads fired a close range effort past the keeper to make it 2.0 after just 10 minutes.

Chance after chance was created but a mixture of poor finishing and decision making meant united had to wait until the half hour mark to go further ahead. Following good play by United a ball was delivered into the box but overran past the far post, James Scott didn’t give up and his persistence paid off as the keeper up ended him giving united a penalty. This was dispatched well by the captain on the day Rob Warwick making it 3.0

The play really was all united with only the odd good move from endmoor to keep our back four busy. Good play down the left from Mark Davis was causing endmoor all sorts of problems as was Jason Tucker. The gaps in the Endmoor defence allowed Scott time to finish a weak effort past endmoor`s keeper making it 4.0 after 35 minutes. Andy Johnson in midfield was having a great game both in the air and on the deck which was great to see as Andy works so hard on his game.

With United in complete control a silly free kick was conceded deep in our own half. This wasn’t defended well and the ball was allowed to drop near the penalty spot and was dispatched very well by the endmoor striker 4.1

Endmoor caused some moments of panic and one such moment saw them hit the bar but there was the impressive Alistair Wilson in the right place to clear.

Almost immediately united went up the other end and scored through a great finish from Graeme Archer who was playing on the wing today, he cut inside and fired a good drive past the keeper making it 5.1 to United.

Half time 5.1

Endmoor were expected to come back at us after the break but again United gave them no time to move on the ball.

United scored a sixth goal through Jason Tucker who was having an awesome first game of the season. It wasn’t the best of shots but the keeper went down too early and allowed the ball to bobble over him. 6.1

A few scrappy moments followed and United went off the boil allowing Endmoor a little bit more of the ball. That said united still created lots of chances and went further ahead through Davies who again made himself space to score making it 7.1

Endmoor to there credit kept going and had a shout for a penalty turned down but United`s defence stopped and a weak shot beat Simon Hansen at his near post. The cat wasn’t very happy but he can be sure in the knowledge that he is a much respected keeper and that was his first mistake in 8 games for united 7.2

There was time for Paul Rutland to make his debut and at the same time Nathan Turner replaced Archer. United kept the pressure on and the best goal of the game was scored by Scott. He collected a ball in the box and from a tight angle turned and fired a great shot over the keepers head making the score 8.2

Johnny Brennan replaced Heads and he took the bull by the horns and got stuck in straight away. He tackled well and passed the ball about to both wingers causing now very tired endmoor lots of problems. Lorne Postlethwaite nearly capped a good game from himself with a long range drive that just went over the bar. There wasn’t to be any more goals as the referee blew for full time.

Final score:

Endmoor reserves 2 Kendal united 8

An impressive start from United who created enough chances to have won by far more but are very happy with the result. The problem is going to be picking a team each week from a squad of 20, but each and every player will have a major role to play this season so if not picked a good attitude is needed to stay focused.

Man of the match:

There were a few candidates today but Jason Tucker was head and shoulders above every player on the pitch.

He has improved steadily each game and has had a very good pre-season which was evident today. He was everywhere and always wanted the ball, once he received it he caused all sorts of problems for Endmoor.

End of Season Review 05/06

The new senior side started in the summer with just a handful of players on hot Sunday mornings and not much equipment to get us going. This slowly changed as more players got word of a new team plus equipment was purchased and basic things like bibs made for better training. By early July United had 15 players but that included two players under 16 and a captain that was yet to arrive for pre-season. Once the whole squad was training together we started to look like an outfit even if we did look rough around the edges.

Our first pre-season game was a real wake up call even though I was let down by a friend who brought his first team through from Morecombe, even after a specific request for his reserves he brought his full squad. We were taken apart and the season ahead looked like being a long and painful experience. But much to the boys credit we improved throughout pre-season and managed to beat a 2nd division side in our last outing before the season began.

The season went with a bang for united as we won the first 3 and looked so good on the ball and played some excellent stuff. At Christmas we were 4th and looking good, a couple of players had moved on for differing reasons and a couple of new ones joined the ranks.

A brilliant Christmas meal kindly sponsored by our away kit sponsor saw united have a top notch meal and a damn good night before Christmas.

After the break we started slowly and call offs were not helping but no complaints here as we gave as well as we got but at times we were defiantly bullied out of games. As with every season there is a low point and this came with “the cat” Hansen picking up a nasty knee knock in a real cracker of a game against then league leaders Coniston. He luckily recovered well and maintained his mad sense of humour ha ha.

A cup semi final in our first season was reached and united narrowly got beaten in extra time by the side who eventually won it. Prior to this it looked certain we hadn’t done enough to stay in the race for promotion and this defeat really knocked us for a few weeks.

We flagged a little at the end but didn’t lose games just drew them when we should have won comfortably.

United ended the season a very respectable 6th with the following league stats:

11 wins 3 draws 8 defeats

In the cup we have the following stats

Won 3 lost 2

Overall a fantastic start for a new side but more importantly we have played with style and at times real grace, also we never lowered ourselves to our opponent’s argumentative style (that was left to me who at times got a bit carried away) which I apologise for!!

We have a few people to thank for making everything go well this year and they are as follows:

Kendal College and the Beech Hill Hotel for giving us the financial support we needed to get going plus your ongoing support of our team.

Krista, Sue, Ian, Simon, and Steve many many thanks guys your support has been greatly appreciated and has not taken for granted.

A special thank you to Mrs Richardson at the Beech Hill Hotel who has been so generous to the team, you have helped me build the ethic of a well presented club.

My biggest thanks are to the players who have been great and made my job such an enjoyable one!!

The future certainly looks bright but we must keep our ethics plus play fair and sporting football, but now we are a known quantity so we have to work even harder next year!

Kendal united versus Lunesdale reserves 6th may

It had finally arrived our last game of the season and they way the fixtures fell it was to be against champions Lunesdale.

You could tell by the weather summer is fast approaching as it was very hot to begin with. United started slowly and allowed Lunesdale plenty of possession, united had a goal chalked off from a break away move but that is all we had to show for the first 10 minutes. Lunesdale played relaxed football safe in the knowledge they were champions and united just didn’t perform. We huffed and puffed all half and created at best half chances. Lunesdale took us apart and the score at half time was a nightmare 4.0 to them.

With nothing to lose second half and a long summer ahead united started to play better football and this meant at least we tested the keeper. James Scott got a goal back with a fine finish from just inside the box bringing the score back to 4.1.

We now looked much brighter and the defence looked much more solid. Lorne Poslethwaite who had a good first half continued to perform well and back up attacks. A couple of united efforts hit the outside of the post and chances should have been taken. Lunesdale went further ahead with a good goal making it 5.1 with 15 minutes to go.

United just couldn’t find the net again so Lunesdale completed there season with a win on the last day.

Final score united 1 Lunesdale 5

Man of the match:

This player has been immense all season and has probably surprised himself how well he has done but today proved the point well. Lone Postlethwaite had another great game today and deserves to be man of the match.

Not our day today and I am not sure if the emotion of it being the last game of the season or Lunesdale just playing relaxed football but we didn’t look at the races today. We were duly punished in what turned out to be quite a good natured match with both managers enjoying banter on the sidelines. On these sorts of days you have to accept the inevitable with grace which we did.

As Lunesdale left the pitch the united lads enjoyed a cold beer courtesy of the manager in the centre circle as tough but thoroughly enjoyable first season ended.

The conversation was excellent and I hope all the lads enjoyed the ride this year!!

A classic moment finished the season perfectly for united following a great gesture from Lunesdale.

They have a tradition in there club that a player who maybe misses an open goal or commits a real howler has to stand up in the changing room after the game and sing a song of the other players choice.

Well after an amazing miss by none other than Liam Postlethwaite we set up Liam for this dubious honour. Not only do you have to sing the song but you have to put on a very ugly shirt at the same time.

So as united made there way back to the changing rooms all the Lunesdale lads assembled outside our changing room waiting for him. The united lads first of all congratulated and gave Lunesdale a round of applause for there winning of promotion then Liam was asked to step forward.

He was duly honoured with the shirt which he put on and the request from the opposing team was “the road to Amarillo”

He was assisted by the away manager causing much amusement to everyone, but every person joined in and there where nearly 25 people all singing and dancing about singing the song.

What a great way to finish our season!!

p.s: he got to keep the shirt so keep an eye out for him wearing it in idols and passions over the summer!!

Kendal United away V Dent Reserves

May the 2nd

United made the journey to  Dent last night for there penultimate league fixture of the season. United reverted to a 5 man midfield and pushed James Scott up front as a lone striker, Nathan Turner also started his first game for a while. As usual for the past few games we started slowly and looked a little nervous but soon our game began to flow. Both wingers were heavily involved in our good play and Jason Tucker nearly put us one nil up on the 10 minute mark but his shot snaked past the wrong side of the post. Plenty of chances were now being created and Andy Johnson had a couple of efforts but couldn’t test the keeper. Scott up front was like a terrier and his work rate kept the Dent defence on its toes. On the 20 minute mark United went ahead following excellent play by Tucker who fired in a deep cross that eventually made it to Turner. He seemed to take an age to get his shot away but when he did he comfortably beat the keeper making it 1.0

A good period of play followed and United`s defence was looking very solid and this allowed them to join attacks more. United had a few excellent chances but couldn’t quite find the required finish. Kevin Kinchington in goal didn’t have a great deal to do apart from coming out to collect the ball and two corners to defend. With United attacking downhill first half it was imperative to try and get a couple of goals before half time. A second goal was scored by Scott and this was purely down to his persistence, Dent seemed very keen on playing the ball back to the keeper and Scott had been unlucky not to score before. This time he worked the keeper well and eventually got the ball off him and finished well, this was Scott’s first goal for the club and it was much deserved. 2.0. A few moments later the referee blew for half time with United looking comfortable.

Half time 2.0

United knew they would be put to the test going up the slope second half and expected the usual long ball tactic. Dent fired in a couple of long balls that the whole back four dealt with really well giving the whole team confidence. Glen McNichol who’s role had now changed totally from the first half as he was deployed in front of the back four was controlling the game. He was excellent at collecting the ball and distributing early passes making it easy for United to spring forward. Soon after the re-start United went further ahead again through Scott, a good break from him saw the keeper rushing from his line so he lifted the ball over the keepers head and the shot dropped into the back of the net making it 3.0 to United. Confidence now oozed through United and everyone wanted the ball causing mayhem for Dent. Turner and Tucker where playing really well in the wide positions, both produced great crosses for Scott to attack. A hat trick was soon completed by Scott following good play down the wings he fired a low drive past the keeper to make the score 4.0 to United.

It was a case of total control for United as Dent seemed to accept the inevitable, only a few very long shots made it past the excellent United defence and they were well wide of the mark. United were awarded a free kick just over the half way line and it was taken by McNichol, he floated a sublime ball for Scott who had flashed across the penalty area to meet the ball perfectly and bury his header deep in the corner. What a great goal this was and both players showed a touch of class in the move, Scott had scored his fourth goal on what was proving to be an excellent night. There was still time left for united to score more goals and had Tucker had his shooting boots on then the score could have been even better by this stage but it just wasn’t Jason’s night. His fellow winger Turner who had put in one of his best performances for United floated a cracking ball into the box, this caused panic and so much so that the centre half planted a firm header past his own goalie making the score 6.0.

A gauge of the control United had was that Kinchington in goal had one save to make all game, a welcome clean sheet for him and the team looked likely tonight. Another chance was taken to give Alistair Wilson a run but this time at left back, again he looked composed and he seems to have a great aura on the football pitch. The game finished with United in attack and in control so it was a score line we thoroughly deserved on the night.

Final score Dent 0 Kendal United 6

Man of the Match:

After a good few weeks of sweat and toil James Scott finally got his just rewards tonight, four different goals completely and this shows his true value to the team. He was excellent tonight and thoroughly deserves to be man of the match.

Kendal United versus Endmoor

Saturday April 29th

United faced Endmoor on Saturday on a cracking day that made the fixture feel more pre-season than a league game. A few changes had to me made as Graeme Archer had picked up a knock from the last game and that looks to have ended his season early, also Andrew Thoburn returned in goal. United went for a change in formation and played two strikers with James Scott partnering Matty Blamire in a search for goals. For the 2nd game running United started sloppily, simple errors were causing unnecessary moments of panic. James Scott had a great run at goal but couldn’t keep his shot down much to his frustration. Jason Tucker started the game well and looked dangerous when going forward; it was Tucker who opened the scoring as he collected a good pass and ran on with it then slotted it past the keeper 1.0.

United started to want the ball a bit more and good work by Scott meant midfielders could push up and support attacks.

The referee awarded a free kick to United right on the edge of the box and the opportunity was given to Rob Warwick, he cracked a sweet effort into the top corner and my word he enjoyed that!! 2.0

Endmoor were really struggling and that was a credit to United but our football didn’t flow it and was very patchy. That said we went further ahead through Blamire who finished from close range making it 3.0 with half an hour played. Thoburn in the home goal hadn’t had a lot to do but anything that came his way he dealt with well. United were now attacking with real menace and had Endmoor on the back foot, so much so that United scored a fourth through a surprise source. United had built an attack up to the edge of the Endmoor box when a shout went out for the ball and there was Lorne Postlethwaite who finished crisply into the bottom corner. Everyone celebrated this goal as Lorne has been immense this year and is a popular lad and that showed when he scored. So now in total control United went for it and just before half time got a 5th. Dan Postlethwaite was in the right place in the box and his shot flew past the young endmoor keeper making it 5.0.

One change was made at half time and it saw Nathan Turner come on, he has been very patient this year and this game looked perfect for him to shine. To stay we didn’t start well would be understating it a bit, we were asleep and allowed Endmoor to score a very simple goal. Making it 5.1

Endmoor`s tails were up and United just didn’t get going, it wasn’t helpful for each team that the referee persistently stopped the game for reasons best known to him.

Endmoor had changed there keeper at half time as the young lad they had in goal was unfortunately just out of his depth a bit, United knew The replacement wasn’t a goalie but couldn’t get shots on target and the game got very scruffy. Mark Barnes Davis was having a great 2nd half and his forward running was a pleasure to watch. On a couple of occasions Davis could have had a shot at goal but typical mark he made chances for others and they weren’t taken. Andy Johnson came on in midfield and Dan Posslethwaite was pushed up into attack as united tried to step up the tempo. Glen McNichol had a couple of long range efforts but wasn’t testing the keeper although his excellent balls all game was causing panic for endmoor. Turner made some great space down the left and went on to fire a rasping drive that rose late and he saw it go agonisingly over. Thoburn in goal was making good decisions and made a couple of good saves and showed his usual commitment to the cause. Following a substitution the referee called for a drink break and this shocked the United manager as much as the endmoor gaffer as although it was warm it is only April. These sorts of stops broke the whole 2nd half up for both teams and made it a poor spectacle to watch. One bright spot was a debut for a lad called Alistair Wilson who has looked composed playing for Steve and Andy in the under 16`s all season. The minute he came on he had to deal with a threat to the United goal and he got a vital foot in and then promptly won the next 3 headers. He looks a real talent for the future and will hopefully get a few minutes in for the seniors in the last two games.  It was a ragged game in the 2nd half and neither side played well but United had secured all 3 points early on and couldn’t quite raise there game again after half time.

Full time

United 5 Endmoor 1

Man of the match

Called in as late cover on a few occasions this year Andrew Thoburn has really performed well for United and today was no different. He dealt with things really well and although he is a little unorthodox at times he gives his all. United have won 4 and drawn 1 with Thoburn in goal and this shows how well he has done and today was no exception.

Kendal United away versus Shap April 25th

United headed north to play Shap on Tuesday night on what looked a good but very firm pitch. United started very slowly and could have gone 3 goals down in the opening 15 minutes as Shap used the first team striker well. It does seem so unfair teams can use players from the higher divisions when they get a night fixture but it seems to be common practice in our league!!

After the early storm united started to move the ball about well and Glen McNichol started to find his range of passes, one excellent ball found Jason Tucker in space and his fine effort just drifted past the post. Equally good play from Johnny Brennan meant United were starting to find spaces behind the Shap back four. Make no mistake this was a truly rough game and some of the tackling and after the ball had gone rough stuff was well out of order. Shap still nagged away at United and only good defending and poor finishing kept the score down. Graeme Archer sprung Shap`s offside trap and managed a good effort on goal but the Shap keeper was in fine form. One attack saw United exposed at the back and only a fantastically timed tackle from Liam Postlethwaite prevented the striker from having a free run at our goal. As the half came to a close United started to get a real grip on the game and Shap seemed to tire.

Half time 0.0

United continued their fine movement from the latter stages of the first half and Shap were struggling to live with us at times. Tucker down the right was having a great game and it was good to see him return to the form we know he is capable of. His passing and movement allowed United to attack quickly knowing a quality ball would be delivered. Shap were now reduced to long ball tactics but found the United back four much more alert. On the couple of occasions Shap got forward early on they found Kevin Kinchington at his best, one reaction save was from the top drawer and his alertness was fantastic. The rough and tumble started to tell and a couple of substitutions were made to freshen things up. Archer was played in with a perfect ball and he ran straight at the keeper and fired a bullet shot that hit the hit square in the face and went wide. Archer couldn’t believe his luck as it just doesn’t seem to go his way some times but credit to Graeme he never gives up. This game was end to end stuff and both teams had chances but it was United who took the lead with just over 10 minutes to go. Another quality ball from McNichol saw both James Scott and Archer beat the offside trap and it was Archer who collected the pass to finish well past the despairing dive of the keeper. The lads celebrated this one with him as he has had a tough couple of weeks on the luck front but this saw him score goal number 20 for the season. 1.0 united.

Could it be our luck had changed after dominating teams recently that we could maybe snatch all three points!! Shap threw the kitchen sink and more at United with long balls being fired into our box on a regular basis. It wasn’t to be our day as Shap who went all out for an equaliser got lucky off a deflection and it agonisingly hit the post and went in 1.1.

A great run saw Nathan Turner break free on the left and fire a ball across the box that just couldn’t be put in by the onrushing players. Turner played a very unselfish ball but as he gets older he will be encouraged to have a go and shoot at goal as he has a crisp left foot shot that will beat even the most agile keeper. Another long ball caused panic in the United defence and again Shap had the break of the ball and somehow smuggled it into the net at the back post to take a 2.1 lead. A devastating blow for United who only a few minutes before had led 1.0.

A good move saw Archer again beat the offside trap but in a 60/40 with Archer as favourite the keeper went in very hard and at the very least it was a free kick and yellow card but nothing was given. Archer was taken off as a precaution and the game was nearly pulled back level by his replacement. A fast break saw United expose the high line of Shap one last time and following a good run by Matty Blamire his shot just wouldn’t drop in time and went agonisingly over.

A thoroughly gutted United despaired as the referee blew for full time as although we maybe didn’t deserve to win. But we at least deserved a draw but it wasn’t to be.

Final score united 1 Shap 2

After a shaky start we got much better but a few vital decisions didn’t go our way, plus we didn’t make the most of our possession but Shap away is never going to be an easy tie. Equally Shap`s early play should have seen them put us out of sight but we battled back well only to be outdone at the end. Again we played the good football and we must keep faith in our “ball to feet” philosophy as it will take us far,

Man of the match:

For United to have a chance the wingers had to work hard and it was Jason Tucker who took the bull by the horns tonight. After a quiet couple of games Tucker excelled in taking players on and trying to get a shot away, equally he played some fine balls into the danger zones and kept going right until the end. It’s a pleasure to watch Jason when he uses the ball so well so a much deserved man of the match tonight.

Kendal United versus Coniston Saturday 15th April

United entertained second place Coniston on Saturday hoping to put the Tuesday night game out of our minds. One change was made and that was in goal as Andrew Thoburn returned for his fourth appearance. It was a cracking day and not to dissimilar to pre-season weather so both sides were going to feel the heat today.

United started brightly and looked comfortable on the ball causing Coniston to chase the game thus allowing gaps to appear. Graeme Archer managed to get a long range effort away but it slid wide, his movement and control of the ball was allowing captain McNichol to get into advanced positions from midfield. United saw plenty of the ball but at times wanted too long with it so this allowed Coniston break up our good play easily. Both centre half’s for united were having an excellent game and have certainly made us hard to score against recently. A couple of good free kicks saw united put the Coniston defence under pressure but each time they managed to deal with the situation. A good in swinging corner from Coniston nearly resulted in a goal but the defenders header hit the ground and bounced over the bar. United managed a couple of efforts on goal but each time the goalkeeper was in a good position to save easily each time. Coniston seemed quite happy to launch the ball up field as often as possible and this allowed united to re-start attacks but wasn’t always pretty to watch.

Half time 0.0

United had certainly been on top in the first half, so the plan was to be more composed when distributing the ball and try to create clear cut openings. We started well and continued to press Coniston and also stopped them creating chances. Archer up front was working his socks off and his movement across the box nearly saw him sneak a shot past the keeper but it went just wide. Jason Tucker found himself with a bouncing ball he didn’t expect to come his way but just couldn’t get it down quick enough and saw his shot go over the bar. There was a long period where Coniston couldn’t get out of there own half and united had the game totally under control but still our luck in front of goal deserted us. As in all of these tight type of games there is a chance you might get hit on the break, Coniston worked the ball through to there striker who ran clear but Thoburn saved and smothered the ball well to keep them out. Had we conceded then it would have been a massive blow as we were in complete control. Nathan Turner and Johnny Brennan were brought on to change things. Turner down the left was given a good supply and his movement made Coniston defend deeper. With a couple of minutes to go united Archer broke free from his marker and sprinted towards goal firing a great shot goal wards only to see the keeper pull off a good save then get up and save the rebound well from Turner. This summed up our day today as again we looked the better and more likely side to score but it hasn’t been our week or day!!

Final score 0.0

We played very well today and were unfortunate not to take all 3 points but we reduced a top team to just two serious efforts on our goal. With a bit more composure and awareness at times we can turn these draws in good wins I am sure.

When we travelled to Coniston in the away fixture, we were concerned about being outplayed over the two fixtures. We certainly didn’t show this and 4 points from a team that won 12 on the bounce is a very good achievement

.

Man of the match:

Another solid performance from Liam Postlethwaite again today who with defensive partner Warwick made us very hard to beat at the back. One of his tackles nearly popped a ball but as always with Liam it was a fair tackle and one there to be won. He goes about his job without fuss and gets better each game, allowing us to build from the back with confidence that he is there behind should it all go wrong.

Kendal united versus dent Tuesday 11th April

United entertained dent on Tuesday, on a pitch that was made playable due to an immense amount of work by Ian Poss on Saturday and good work on Tuesday.

The game started fast and dent didn’t allow any time on the ball and looked comfortably the better side in the opening exchanges. With no games for a couple of weeks due to the poor weather both sides looked a little rusty, united seemed to wait for the ball and not attack it. Slowly but surely united became more fluent but still tried to play too much football in dangerous areas of the pitch. Good work and movement by Daniel postlethwaite down the left started to create holes in the dent back line; James Scott had a great effort saved by the excellent dent keeper.

United`s football never really flowed but good chances came and went with both Graeme archer and Jason Tucker denied by a mixture of good goalkeeping and poor finishing. Dent managed to create a good opening and the strikers shot should have nestled in the back of the net but he hit it luckily for united too hard and it hit the bar and went over. Frustration began to creep into United`s play as so many chances were not taken thus allowing dent the odd foray forward that could have caused united problems, again Liam Postlethwaite was having a good game at the back.

 Half time 0.0

The emphases was to keep going and try to bury the chances we were creating but the second half continued in the same vein as united created chance after chance.

Archer had a good opportunity with a one on one with the keeper but his shot just drifted over the bar. Quite how united didn’t get a penalty when Daniel Posslethwaite was taken out in the box only the poor referee could explain, the referees game got worse after a poor tackle by a united player then the dent player got up and kicked out but he only gave a yellow card which should have been a red. This really fired united up and for a good 10 minutes united upped a gear but still couldn’t find a finish. Even when the keeper was beaten there was a defender in the way to save them from going behind. United had a couple of good positions from free kicks but again the target couldn’t be found. Dent made a substitution and the lad that came on caused all sorts of trouble and managed to break free on a couple of occasions but couldn’t find the finish. With 10 minutes to go united conceded a corner which was duly swung in and following a bit of a melee the ball was bundled into the back of the net making it 1.0 to dent. This was hard to take as united had created and this is no exaggeration a good 12 goal scoring opportunities which for one reason or another weren’t taken. A cruel blow but it looked like being one of those nights so it was half expected by those who watch us regularly. There has only been one other game we haven’t scored in all season so it was hoped we could snatch one late on. United pushed on more in hope than anything else and to there credit kept going right until the last few minutes when finally our lucked changed. Scott worked his way into the box from the left and went past one tackle and then was caught by the second, the referee took his time but couldn’t deny us this penalty. Up stepped Rob Warwick and some looked away including myself, am I told it was a great penalty for which we were grateful for after such a dominating game. The game finished with united on the attack but it was far too late bye then and the referee blew for full time.

Final score

Kendal united 1 Dent 1

A very strange game as so many players didn’t get the ball on target and that combined with a great display from the keeper made it a fairly miserable night for all concerned. Although a point was gained there was a definite feeling of 2 points lost as we had such control. Another learning curve but at any level you have to take your chances when on top or you will be open to the odd breakaway that results in a defeat or draw rather than a certain victory.

Man of the match:

One player was behind a lot of the good movement and invention today and that was Daniel posslethwaite who had an excellent game. He makes good space for himself and has the confidence to run at defenders which he did very well today, on another day he could have scored a couple but can be proud of his performance tonight.

Austinwren Cup Semi Final

Kendal united versus Penrith united Saturday 25th march

An excited but slightly nervous united travelled to a neutral ground up at Lunesdale on Saturday to face Penrith united in what promised to be a tough game. With both sides registering a win against each other it was always going to be tight but with a good official and linesmen it was hoped united could play there natural game.

Simon Hansen returned in goal which was great to see after his horrific knee injury earlier in the season, also Johnny brennan moved back to left back to replace the unavailable Mark Davis. Both sides matched each other early on and the game was even for the first ten minutes but Penrith started to create half chances. That said they didn’t have a clean shot at goal, united counter attacked well and managed turn round the Penrith defence. Jason tucker was seeing a lot of the ball for united and his strength and willingness to tackle and move the ball gave united good options from the right. Graeme archer had a good chance but couldn’t get his shot on target form a tight angle and under pressure from a defender. Hansen in goal was feeling very uncomfortable and it did look doubtful for about 10 minutes as it seemed he might have to come off. This was a real worry for united as young Kevin Kinchington wasn’t named as a sub as it was felt three outfield players would be more beneficial on the day. As the half went on he seemed to be more comfortable so that was good news for united. Penrith won a series of corners which caused numerous problems for our back four, but they held out and played good calm football which was great to watch. Both sides were so well matched that chances were rare but this didn’t take away the quality of the play as they both worked hard to create openings. Penrith worked the ball well on a couple of occasions but like us they failed to hit the target. James Scott was having a great game and his running off the ball was superb as was his play when he received it, his partner Andy Johnson was also having a good game up against a tough opponent. Johnson received a great ball in the heart of the Penrith penalty area but couldn’t get enough on it to put it past the keeper much to the keeper’s obvious relief. Dan postlethwaite went on a fine run past 3 players but ran out of steam when he got close to goal, what a run it was and great to see, a credit to him as well as he was asked to play out of position for tactical reasons and did so without complaining.

Half time 0.0

This was a really tight game but it was all to play for so united concentrated on doing more of the same and try to spring past the Penrith defence. United had a great period for the first 20 minutes of the half and it looked like united might find a breakthrough. Captain Mcnichol was having another good game but was certainly targeted by the Penrith players as someone to mark closely. He worked hard to create space and his passing was worrying Penrith and there frustration was culminating in a flurry of yellow cards. Scott was on fire and looks a massive addition to our squad, for over an hour he worked his socks off for the cause. A change was made and this saw Johnson come off for Stephen moss to join the fray. Johnson had done the job he had been asked to do and can be very proud of himself as he had a great game but it was time to change it around. Moss was given a similar task to stop the Penrith midfield having too much time on the ball. Brennan was also replaced with Nathan Turner coming on to give united a more natural left wing option. Turner started with a fine tackle and this settled him into the game straight away. Both sides had half chances but none of them really caused the keepers many problems. Liam postlethwaite was superb and he did the simple things perfectly, some of his tackling was awesome and he was having a great afternoon. A more even and tight game you will struggle to see and 0.0 sounds like a boring game but this was far from it. It was now heading towards the possibility of extra time. The last 10 minutes were amazing as both sides had a chance each to win the game. Firstly United`s striker archer latched onto a very poor back pass but couldn’t keep his shot down, then from a corner it looked like they had scored from a fine header but somehow the “cat” lived up to his name with a excellent dive and save. The referee blew his whistle for full time so it was as expected going to extra time.

Full time 0.0

Extra time:

There really wasn’t much in it over the whole previous 90 minutes so the plan was the same as at the start of play keep it tight and try to create the opening. The game continued as per the previous period but Penrith took the lead from a great finish from distance and this was a massive blow for united. There was still a good bit of the period to go plus the second half so it was hoped we could also find a finish. Penrith now changed there game plan as expected and looked even in the first period to take the ball into the corners and remain in possession. United now had to work extra hard to get it then move the ball about to create gaps.

2nd period:

There were by now some weary looking legs on both sides and it was starting to take its toll. Credit to united we kept going and worked really hard to try to get back in the game.

All the hard work was soon to be in vain as a curling shot from a midfielder found its way inside the far post much to his surprise to give them an unassailable 2.0 lead. Mathew blamire who had to wait patiently all game due to the possibility of Hansen not making the whole game and maybe requiring replaced if penalties were looking possible got the final few minutes. Well done to Matty he understood the situation and never moaned so I thank him for that and hope that wont happen to him again.

A devastating blow for united and this really was the final nail in the coffin as there was now no time left to get back in the game.

A couple of chances were created to get a consolation goal but it just wasn’t to be our day.

Final score:

Kendal united 0 Penrith united 2

Anyone who watched the game yesterday saw a great advert for football in the area because both sides made it a cracking game. The referee and linesmen were good, again we played without anyone getting booked in comparison to Penrith`s 4 yellow cards.

The lads did themselves proud and were gutted afterwards but the manager shook each player by the hand and thanked them for a massive effort. There day in the sun will come if we stay together as a team then the future is very bright for them and Kendal united.

Man of the match:

A really tough one this week, there were two or three players who were superb and contributed to the game so well.

Liam postlethwaite was superb throughout and goes about his business quietly and effectively, today he was excellent and deserves to be man of the match.

Austinwren Cup Quarter Final

Kendal United versus Windermere Saturday 18th March

United entertained Windermere on Saturday in what was supposed to be an away game but due to snow on the Windermere pitch the tie was switched to Kendal.

Three changes were made to the starting line up and this saw Thoburn return in goal, James Scott make his full debut and Johnny Brennan return in midfield. United started fast and could have gone ahead as early as the first minute as Graeme Archer sprinted clear but his shot was fired over the bar. United looked much better than the previous week and our football started to flow slowly but surely, Glen Mcnichol began to dominate midfield and his excellent passes caused Windermere all sorts of problems. It wasn’t long before united took a deserved lead and it was top scorer Archer who got it with a shot from just inside the box giving the keeper no chance.1.0.

United then looked like going on to score more but a failure to clear a ball on the right hand side presented the grateful Windermere striker with a chance, he took it from close range making the score after 20 minutes 1.1.

This gave united a jolt and allowed Windermere to get back in the game but United`s defence stood firm, this allowed the midfield to build attacks. United`s passing football which had all but disappeared the previous week was now returning and Windermere couldn’t live with us.

On the half hour mark united went ahead again and it was Archer who found the net after a good save from the keeper saw him follow it up and put it past the keeper making it 2.1 to united.

Good movement down both wings was creating chances, this combined with strong tackling from Scott and Dan Postlethwaite meant we were attacking regularly but not quite finding the finish. On three separate occasions the Windermere back four were all at sea as the ball pinballed about in the box but a final touch couldn’t be found so they survived. With 10 minutes of the half remaining united got a deserved third through Jason Tucker who got up at the back post to put a looping header past the keeper making it 3.1. This was no more than we deserved and united should have been out of sight but we just couldn’t get the vital last touch.

Half time united 3 Windermere 1

United now faced the stiff breeze and the plan was to keep the ball down and build through the wings. United did this well and Archer could have and should have taken a couple more chances but it wasn’t going his way after the break. Hard tackling from both sides kept the game pretty even in the first quarter of the half but the introduction of Nathan Turner gave United an added attacking dimension. He got into the game straight away and put in some excellent crosses, he was ably assisted by Mark Davis who was getting forward with some purpose. United were now creating a steady stream of chances but again couldn’t seem to find the finish. Even Liam Postlethwaite got in on the act as he was put through by Archer but he couldn’t find a way past the last defender. Tucker and Lorne Posslethwaite were doing well defending and getting forward so united were attacking well down both wings.

A tough but fair tackle saw a Windermere player go down clutching his leg in some pain. After a few minutes it became obvious medical help was required so an ambulance was called. This arrived rapidly and it looked like the young lad had possibly broken a bone in his foot so he was taken off to hospital. The game had now been stopped for some 20 minutes so both teams had to warm up again. United continued to dominate and Matty Blamire came on to replace Archer as united searched for another goal to make the tie safe. A fourth goal came from

Dan Postlethwaite who arrived in the box to bury a cross past the keeper making the score 4.1. Chance after chance went begging for united and Mcnichol kept putting excellent balls in to the danger zones but it just wouldn’t go in.

Andy Johnson who had just came on as sub fired a great effort towards goal but it just wouldn’t drop in time and went over the bar. Scott had a late chance but his shot hit the defender and went wide. With only a few minutes remaining Thoburn pulled off a great save as he flicked a deep shot over the bar, he had no right to get the ball but his determination was excellent as was the save. United finished the game in total control and deserved the victory.

Final score 4.1 to United.

This victory sees united go up to Lunesdale next Saturday in the semi final which is a great achievement in our first season.

We meet Penrith united who gave us a really tough afternoon the previous week and are the form side in the fourth division. Hopefully with a strong referee and for the first time this season qualified linesmen we can perform like we know we can. On the point of the previous game we received an apology and were congratulated by the league for not reacting to some of the terrible tackles and gamesmanship by Penrith which was gratefully received by all the players and manager. It’s hoped we can go up there next week and play our football and see if we can get ourselves to the final!!

Man of the match

There were several excellent performances this week but one player stood out above everyone and that was captain Mcnichol. He played intelligent football and cajoled the lads when required, a top performance from glen and a much deserved award of man of the match.

After speaking to the Windermere manager on Sunday morning it emerged that the young lad had only bruised his foot and will be back playing within two weeks. That’s great news and we wish him a speedy recovery.

Kendal united versus Penrith united Saturday 11th march

United entertained Penrith on Saturday, which meant a meeting between two sides that were within 1 point of each other in the table. On Friday there was no referee available so it was action stations trying to source an official from somewhere, but an early morning call off at another game meant one was available. The official was one that that had refereed us before and he was well known as a weak character and this was a real concern for such a big match. This said united had a strong line up and a surprisingly strong bench so it was hoped this wouldn’t affect our game. The game started at blistering pace and the tone was set early on by Penrith who were still smarting from our win on there patch late last year. No time was allowed on the ball for united and Penrith flew at us early with physical and aggressive football. Within 5 minutes you could tell the referee had no control on the game and this caused all sorts of problems for united. That said sloppy defending gifted united an early goal and this was soon followed by another making the score 2.0 to Penrith in the first 20 minutes. United just couldn’t get going and it really was for the first time this season looking like boys versus men. Every player in the united side looked a yard off the pace and allowed Penrith time and space to move the ball which by now was causing havoc in our half of the pitch. United got lucky as a looping shot/cross eluded the goalkeeper to find the net making the score 1.2 to Penrith, impossible to name a united player as a scorer as it was a blunder by the Penrith keeper.  This at the time seemed like a lifeline but it wasn’t to be the case as Penrith continued to dominate and harass when not in possession. Two long range efforts before half time further increased Penrith`s lead and this saw united come in for the break 4.1 down and looking lost.

Half time united 1 Penrith 4

Two changes and a few choice words saw united go out and at least try to match Penrith, James Scott made his debut and certainly showed some good touches but it wasn’t a nice game to make a debut. We started much better but it was so unlike united we just couldn’t seem to string a few basic passes together, Penrith carried on moaning and fouling there way through the game and the referee just got worse. This really affected United`s play as no one wanted the ball which meant Penrith just carried on in the same vain. They scored a 5th in a breakaway move and it looked very grim for united after just an hour.

 5 .1 to Penrith.

We just couldn’t get going and the referee was that bad he disallowed a couple of goals for Penrith but this proved he didn’t have a clue on the day as they were perfectly good goals. This said we kept going and got another lucky break as the keeper came flying out to get a ball on the edge of the box, livewire archer went round him and finished well making the score 2.5

Even then nothing worked for united and the Penrith players used there tactics well to ensure we didn’t get going. An unbelievable decision by the referee capped a bad day for united as the Penrith keeper flew out to drop archer inside the box, he was the last man and should have gone. Amazingly the referee only produced a yellow card and then changed his mind from a penalty to a free kick, incredible in the modern era to see a referee change his mind not only once but twice in 30 seconds.

Penrith scored a 6th goal and by now united had had enough and just wanted the final whistle to go. This duly came much to the relief off all who support and play for Kendal.

Final score 2.6 to Penrith

What a horrible game and the Penrith tactics worked perfectly as they knew they couldn’t let us play but what a horrible way to win points. One thing that was evident from all who watched is the overwhelming feeling of relief that no one got hurt as the referee had no control at all.

No sour grapes here but as a young side we need referees to protect us with the basic laws of the game and this didn’t happen today.

I doubt the result who have been much different but when young lads know the referee is so poor they don’t want the ball for fear of a malicious challenge.

A massive learning curve today and for those who read my reports regularly a lack of Kendal player’s names in my report but that is for a reason. No united player, strangely enough performed on the day and we were well beaten so a bad day at the office and it will become a distant memory soon I am sure.

Heads will need to come up as we have a massive cup game at Windermere this Saturday and we won’t play this poorly again in a long while.

There was always going to be a game that young lads came up against a brutal team like Penrith and we had a taste after Christmas at Greystoke.

Amazingly enough the referee in question phoned me on Sunday to ask me the name of the player he had booked so what an incompetent man he was, one I have told the league I will not except as a referee for home games again!!!!

Man of the match:

For the first time this season there really wasn’t an outstanding player, this isn’t a dig at the team but no one performed on the day so it would be unfair to single a player out for such a reward.

Forget it lads and lets enjoy our 6 remaining league games and see where the cup run takes us, remember we have had a fantastic season so lets enjoy what’s left.

Langwathby versus Kendal united Saturday 25th February

United travelled north to play langwathby on Saturday after a couple of very frustrating weeks with no game, this was due to matches being called off by our opponents. Andrew Thoburn returned for his second match in goal replacing Kinchington who was unable to play.

It truly was a foul day with very high winds that were biting cold and this was always going to affect the quality of the game. The plan was to try and win the toss and go with the wind at our backs first half. Luckily this happened and united started very brightly, in the first few minutes united hammered the langwathby keeper with shots. It didn’t take long for united to get ahead but it came from an unusual source in Lorne postlethwaite, he worked himself free in the box to fire a low shot deep into the corner.1.0. Straight after the kick off united got a second though Jason Tucker who came in from the right to bury his shot past the keeper 2.0. A third goal completed an amazing first 6 minutes as Nathan Turner turned in a cross at the back post to make the score 3.0. The game was totally dominated by united and a couple of minutes later a fourth was scored by Graeme Archer who broke away from his marker well to finish comfortably 4.0

Langwathby were shell shocked and just couldn’t live with United`s pace and movement, equally the wind was a big factor and this was emphasised when Turner scored his second straight from an in swinging corner making the score 5.0 after only 15 minutes of play. Chance after chance was being created, langwathby barely broke out of there own half as they couldn’t think of a way to deal with the conditions. Turner fired a cracking shot that crashed against the bar and over and it only seemed a matter of time before we scored again. The game quietened a little and united took a bit more time on the ball but still had complete control. It was on the half hour mark that united scored again, another great finish from Dan Posslethwaite who fired a drive high into the left hand side of the net 6.0

You just couldn’t take your eyes of this game and the next goal came rapidly after Dan’s. What a great goal it was too as Liam Posslethwaite started an attack and received the ball back outside the box and went on to beat the defenders and the keeper then finished calmly making it 7.0

United completed an amazing first half performance with a great finish from emerging Andy Johnson, who took his time and placed a curling shot past the keeper deep into the corner making it 8.0. The united keeper actually only touched the ball once all half and that was to take a goal kick so this gives an idea of how much control united had.

Half time United 8 langwathby 0

The shoe was now going to be on the other foot as the wind showed no sign of easing so a game plan was agreed. United had to try and keep the ball down and support each other as it wasn’t going to be easy in the wind. No long or high passes as the ball would just come straight back or give possession away.  United started the better team and although langwathby were so far behind the wind was causing us as many problems as it had them. We dealt with it well and managed to create some good attacking moves. Captain Mcnichol who had been superb in the first half worked his socks off to keep the ball moving and his close control really eased the pressure at the back. Langwathby got a goal back somewhat speculatively as a shot was fired from the half way line that deceived the united keeper and went in making it 8.1

This spurred united on and mcnichol was rewarded for his efforts as he was on hand in the box to fire loose ball past the keeper making it 9.1 to united. The next goal had to be seen to be believed as the langwathby striker fired a bullet shot straight from the re start and that caught United`s keeper napping, it went straight in the top corner of the net much to everyone’s amusement. Even the united lads congratulated the striker although very tongue in cheek as it was a once in a lifetime goal that will cause Forbes nightmares for a while to come. 9.2.

United could of scored another couple of goals but just couldn’t get enough in the shots for them to beat the keeper.

The plan was working well and united adapted to the conditions, good possession kept langwathby at bay and the emphasis was now to build slowly and hold the ball for longer against the ever increasing wind.

This was taken quite literally by Archer who took great joy in jinking past the keeper and then slowing down to tap the ball over the line. Archer gave the manager a near heart attack as from our angle it looked like he had missed but he assured all he was just following instructions by walking the ball in. This made the score an amazing 10.2 united and it could have been more but langwathby held out.

What a game this was, not pretty by any means but a workman like united played like terriers and adapted to the conditions much better than them. Ten goals is amazing at this level and the lads can be proud of themselves but must remember we will not have another easy afternoon like this for a long time, enjoy it for now and lets get back to work on Tuesday. Next Saturday united travel away in the cup quarter final and it is hoped there recent fine form continues as we have been superb and are hitting a rich vain of form.

Man of the match

In games like this every team needs a leader and today united had that in Glen Mcnichol, he was everywhere all game. He encourages the lads all the time and leads by example, he has learnt his trade well and I am sure the lads appreciate his effort and commitment to the team.

Kendal United away versus Lunesdale Reserves, Austinwren cup round one

United had a daunting task this Saturday against 2nd place Lunesdale who are the form team in division 4 and earlier in the season had beaten us comprehensively.

With three key players missing it was going to be tough, a new keeper again this week which now makes it four different keepers used this season. Ben Dyson replaced Mark Barnes-Davis and Andy Johnson filled the holding role in midfield so it was no surprise United started slowly but Lunesdale weren’t making the most of there early play. This allowed united time to build and the most likely source for united looked like being Jason Tucker as he managed to get free on several occasions but his final ball was lacking, as was his desire to take a chance and shoot. Archer up front was causing much concern but a mixture of him being too eager and the linesman having a twitchy arm meant he was flagged offside continually. At the back united had a few scary moments but Rob Warwick who was playing sweeper was having a good afternoon as were the other members of the back four. The patient football eventually paid off, after a good attacking corner the ball was pushed clear to Warwick who was just inside the box and he took a touch then buried a fine drive into the top of the net.1.0 United. This was proving to be a tough game as expected and united had to fight tooth and nail to gain possession against a strong physical side full of confidence. The game was pretty even as the referee blew for half time.

Half time 1.0 united

As expected Lunesdale flew out of the traps and caused problems but United`s keeper held firm and collected all there long balls and high corners very well. After an initial onslaught united again played the better football but still the linesman kept raising his flag and this was causing much frustration from both players and the manager. After a ticking off from the referee the manager agreed to shut up but it seemed we had to beat the linesman and 11 players to get a shot on goal. Soon after this united got a stroke of luck after good work saw a ball delivered to Johnny Brennan who took it down well and hit it goal wards , it clipped the defenders heel past the keeper but Brennan can claim it as it was defiantly going in anyhow. 2.0 United. This shook Lunesdale who haven’t been beaten for some 8 games, they started to argue amongst themselves and this played into United`s hands a treat. It seemed one of there players had never been tackled before as every time he got caught he reacted like a raging bull but the lads did well not to react. The next goal was vital and it was united who scored it, Tucker who by his own standards wasn’t having the best of afternoons broke free on the right and decided to shoot early. His shot was sublime and it beat the keeper all ends up as his right footed shot nestled deep into the left hand corner of the net making it 3.0 united. With only 10 minutes to go surely united would go on to finish Lunesdale off but again we switched off and gave away a silly goal to give them a bit of incentive .3.1 united

That wasn’t to be the case as united added a fourth soon after with another great finish from Dan Poslethwaite. He collected the ball and made space and time to bury a powerful shot over the keepers head much to the joy of his team mates 4.1.

Lunesdale kept fighting and good hands from the keeper and excellent defending kept them at bay allowing united to hit them on the break. Substitute Nathan turner and the ever hardworking archer could have added to the score but Lunesdale’s keeper did well to keep them at bay. With a couple of minutes to go the impressive Liam Poslethwaite picked up a heavy knock and this goes to show how comfortable united had become that he was withdrawn to rest as the game was won even with a few minutes to go. The referee blew to give united a very impressive away win.

What a difference a week can make and if united could sort out some consistency the league table would make even better reading than it already does. A good win in the cup and an early chance for revenge on Windermere, we have to travel there in the next round in 2 weeks time.

Man of the match:

Rob Warwick had an excellent game today and did all the little things right that make a difference between winning and losing. He adapted to a sweeper role well and even with a heavy cold still managed to get a vital foot in when needed.

Kendal united versus Windermere `a` away  Saturday 27th January

This game was a potential banana skin following our excellent performance and win the previous week against Coniston. Windermere were sat at the bottom of the table at the beginning of play so it was always going to be a battle and the small bobbly pitch wasn’t going to help.

United started slowly and allowed Windermere to win the 50/50 balls which created problems at the back. Graeme Archer had a couple of early half chances but the bumpy pitch wasn’t allowing close control, Johnny Brennan nearly turned in a half chance but his shot hit the defender and went for a corner. Windermere 1st corner caused a lot of concern and it seemed united were waiting for the ball to long. It was from the next corner that Windermere took the lead following terrible marking at the back and this allowed a player on the back post to sneak the ball in 1.0 Windermere. United`s play got a little better but not much and it was somewhat fortuitous penalty award that gave an early chance of an equaliser. It was struck with power by Rob Warwick giving the keeper no chance 1.1.

It was hope this would stir united up and push them back but Windermere were like terriers in defence and never allowed time on the ball anywhere on the park. United fell behind to an even worse goal as the ball skidded across the box there was ample time for it to be cleared but it wasn’t and it was gratefully tapped in to give Windermere a 2.1 lead. A great free kick from Dan Posslethwaite just went wide and even at this stage the omens weren’t looking so good for united. Frustration started to set in and this played into Windermere’s hands as they just kept on scrapping and hoofing the ball clear. Only the bar stopped them getting a 3rd goal as again united defended poorly and the striker saw his shot hit the bar and go over. Half time couldn’t come quick enough for the manager as a change of tactics was required.

Half time Windermere 2 united 1

The plan was to keep calm and try to play football and increase the talking as well as the movement off the ball. Matty Blamire replaced Andy Johnson as united went for a conventional 4.4.2 formation which saw him join Archer up front. United huffed and puffed with no real cutting edge and Windermere out fought us in every area, the only bright spark was another good game from Dan Posslethwaite who got stuck in and tried to find a way through. The tactic from Windermere was working and much to United`s frustration play was either spoilt or broken up by a workman like Windermere and clear cut chances were of a premium. The referee who by any standard was having an awful afternoon got worse. He was bad for both sides and nobody feared his authority which is always dangerous and this allowed them to break up the game more. Archer broke free and lobbed the keeper well only to see a very late flag go up to deny him the equaliser. This really did sum up United`s afternoon as whatever was tried just didn’t quite come off and of course Windermere used time wasting tactics well. Much to United`s frustration 2.1 is how it ended and everyone felt it was 3 points lost.

Too many united players had an off afternoon and whereas last week we all wanted the ball today we panicked and made poor decisions. Windermere used the squad well and certain players defiantly don’t play each week in the 4th division but that’s football so no sour grapes from us!! I have to say we were lucky earlier on in the season to beat them so maybe its divine retribution.

Man of the match: in what was one of the ugliest games to watch all season one player stood out and that was Daniel Posslethwaite He gets better every game and today was a tough battle by any standards so he did well to keep going and try to create chances.

Coniston Reserves v Kendal United Saturday 21st January

With last weeks game called off due to a waterlogged pitch United travelled to runaway leaders Coniston on Saturday. The game started in bright sunshine and this was reflected in United`s early play as it was bright and inventive but at the same time shutting down and hustling when not in possession. A couple of half chances fell to both sides but for the first 15 minutes United had the upper hand with good passing and movement causing Coniston no end of problems. Warning though had been given by the ever moving Coniston strikers who managed to create half chances from virtually nothing causing concern for the united back four. United`s forward play meant gaps would appear but a great diving save from “The Cat” Hansen who was filling in for Kevin Kinchington held them at bay. The play started to turn in Coniston’s favour and they pushed up and took a fortuitous lead with a clinical piece of finishing from there front man. 1.0 Coniston

The next ten minutes were crucial now as Coniston had there tails up but united held firm and continued there good start by moving the ball quickly and precisely . A free kick was awarded to united and up stepped Daniel Posslethwaite, he fired a sublime shot deep into the corner of the net giving the keeper no chance making it 1.1 I think even Daniel was surprised when it went in but what a great goal it was. Every United player wanted the ball and it was a joy to watch as the ball was played from side to side with complete confidence. Coniston were now reduced to long ball football but everyone in the back four stood firm and this allowed United to press on. A lot of excellent football was coming down the right, Lorne Posslethwaite was having a great game and his link play with Jason Tucker was excellent as was Tuckers distribution. United lacked a final ball and at times seemed to think about the pass too long thus not making use of there possession. Too many times Coniston were let off the hook but credit to united, we don’t do long ball so we kept going hoping to find a way through.

Half time 1.1

The half time team talk concentrated on maintaining momentum and not allowing Coniston time or space on the ball. As expected Coniston started fast and Hansen had a couple of shots fired at him which as usual he did well to handle. It was United though that took a deserved lead when the Coniston defence stood still after seeing a flag go up, the referee overruled and United kept on going allowing Graeme Archer to set up Glen Mcnichol for a simple tap in. 2.1 United. It was against the run of play as Coniston started better after the break, the next attack saw Hansen get a serious knock on the knee following a one to one with there striker. It was a 50/50 ball but the late pullout of the striker meant Hansen bore the full blow. It was a nasty knock and Simon headed to barrow hospital with Ian Posslethwaite in some agony. Its hard to report the next 2 goals as I was split between Simon and the game obviously more time spent helping Simon. Rob Warwick replaced Hansen in goal and Stephen Moss replaced him at the back giving Andy Johnson a chance to shine in midfield. This was when captain Mcnichol came to the fore and he led the boys by winning tackles and some sublime passes. The referee awarded a penalty to Coniston for handball and this was buried making the game 2.2. This was a crucial time as it could have gone either way, united went ahead again through Archer 3.2 united. Coniston were pressing but United held out and great play saw the ball delivered to Archer who fired past a static keeper making the score an amazing 4.2. All United`s football earlier in the game was now reaping rewards as Coniston started to tire but the referee awarded a very dubious penalty to Coniston which was buried past replacement keeper Warwick making the score with 10 minutes to go 4.3. The game could have gone either way now but it was finished perfectly by Archer who completed his hat trick in some style by lobbing the onrushing keeper putting the game out of Coniston’s reach. 5.3 To United.

How Archer deserved that because virtually every week he is asked to play as a lone striker but doesn’t complain and he bagged goal number 15 for the season.

The game was won and won well against a side only beaten once all season and as the league table suggests it was a tough fixture but 5 goals away is awesome.

Every United player on the day performed and this was great football to watch from both sides but again when asked united shined and deserved there win. Celebration at full time and deservedly so but united have a lot of games to go and it important we approach bottom club Windermere this coming Saturday with the same attitude.

Simon is doing well and an update will be given to all at training, he sends his congratulations on the result but I am sure we all thank him for his commitment to the cause and wish him a speedy recovery.

Final score Coniston 3 Kendal United 5

Man of the Match

A really tough one this week as so many players played well but after analysis of the game it has to be Graeme Archer who was so clinical at important moments in the game. He buried his last chance with aplomb and it was just reward for a fine game from arch.

Kendal united away versus Greystoke reserves 7th January 06

Following the two week Christmas break United travelled north to play Greystoke which meant this was an instant return fixture following our 2.1 win against them in our last game before the break.

One enforced change had to be made as Liam Posslethwaite couldn’t make kick off due to work commitments so this saw Andy Johnson play in an unfamiliar defensive role. The start of this game was truly awful from a united point of view and Greystoke punished errors comprehensively. The first ten minutes saw them go three goals up following poor defending from corners and indecision when in possesion. One goal conceded was particularly bad as a defender had been allowed to ghost in and bury a simple header, it was really looking dire for United. Some 20 minutes had been played before United created there first decent chance but there were signs of United`s fluent passing football coming back. United got lucky on the half hour mark as Jason Tucker fired in a weak effort and had actually turned away assuming the keeper had collected it only to discover he had let it go through his legs. Tucker deserved that goal after being so unlucky with great shots that have come back of the woodwork earlier in the season. So it was now game on, united started to build confidence and the passing got better and better. Mark Davis was having another great game and he pushed up to support the attacks well and made great tackles. Greystoke defended deeper and this allowed united more room in the midfield and this space was used well by Dan posslethwaite, he found time to bury a great drive into the bottom corner giving the keeper no chance 3.2 with 10 minutes to go before half time. United now looked a different side and good chances went begging, equally Greystoke had chances and Kevin Kinchington in goal pulled off a couple of good saves. It looked like United were going to get level as it was all united at this stage. A free kick was awarded outside the box and Rob Warwick’s excellent effort crashed back off the bar to safety and deny united of a worthy equaliser.

Half time 3.2

Changes were made at half time and this saw Liam posslethwaite replace Johnson who worked hard all half , also Stephen moss came on in midfield to help win more headers. This worked well and all the football and that is no exaggeration was United`s, Dan Posslethwaite fired a great volley that just went wide. Graeme Archer worked tirelessly on his own to break through the massed Greystoke defence but it just wouldn’t fall cleanly for him. Davis continued to get forward and support the attacks and tracked back well to make crucial tackles. Defensively it was a different united and Greystoke were reduced to long clearances which were now being collected and distributed well. Lorne posslethwaite played very well all game and his work with Tucker on the wing was looking the likely source for an equaliser. Chances came and went but it was starting to look like united wouldn’t be able to find the breakthrough, Ben Dyson came on and played very well down the left hand side and added a new dimension to the attacks. The corner count was now starting to stack up for united but somehow the keeper managed to hold everything after his earlier error. With 10 minutes to go Archer worked himself free only to be blocked off the ball in what looked like a definite penalty but it wasn’t given!! This summed up United`s second half total domination but no luck to go with it. Moss put a free header just over the bar and Archer saw the keeper hold well from his snatched shot.

There where some disgraceful comments coming from there manager and I was proud of the players who refused to be put off by such tactics. You do wonder at times why certain people are involved in football when they make such nasty comments to a group of young lads, but well done lads for not reacting.

United had one final corner as the referee had said 1 minute to go so everyone bar the keeper was in the box but Greystoke held on to take all three points.

What an afternoon it was and after going down 3 goals so early the lads can be proud of there performance from that moment on, but at any level you cannot give a three goal start. No player gave up and as there captain Glen Mcnichol said in the changing rooms after the game well done for keeping going. Hopefully that won’t happen again and with the top two teams to play on consecutive weeks it is hoped that lesson has been learnt.

Final score Greystoke 3 united 2

Man of the match

Another top performance from Mark Barnes Davis he was excellent all afternoon. Mark has been consistent all season but on days like today I am so glad he plays for united because he was superb!!

Saturday 17th December

Game off due to frozen pitch!!

The christmas break means the next time we play is in the new year with a fixture likely on the 7th of January.

A good first half of the season for the young United side who go into the christmas break in third spot. Well done to all the lads who deserve to be where they are and long may it continue!!

Merry christmas everyone and a happy new year.

Saturday 10th December.

Kendal United V Greystoke Reserves

United started this game slowly and Greystoke`s midfield controlled the early play but took the option of long shots at goal. With Uniteds first decent attack Archer shook off his marker to run clear and fire his shot past the onrushing keeper making it 1.0. Greystoke who could feel aggrieved to be one down pushed up a gear and united conceded another sloppy goal. The pressure was on now and united had to weather a storm but did so well especially Liam Postlethwaite who was having a great game. A fine move down the right found Nathan Turner free and he hit a rare right footed shot that spun into the corner of the net giving the keeper no chance. 2.1 at half time.

The second half was a tough battle and Kevin Kinchington in goal was having another fine afternoon helped by Poslethwaite. Chances came united way and Jason Tucker was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet with a couple of good chances. The United side fought tooth and nail against a strong and at times very aggresive Greystoke side. There were some hairy moments and it seemed the longer the game went on greystoke were going to steal an equaliser but United held on to take all three points. This was a mans performance from a group of mostly young lads who can be very proud of themselves as every player gave 100% all game.

Score 2 – 1

Goals by

Graeme Archer and Nathan Turner

Man of the Match

Liam Postlethwaite- Liam had a great afternoon and produced his best performance of the season. He tracked back and got stuck in and at crucial times he was the only man alert enough to sniff the danger.

Kendal Celtic Reserves verses Kendal United Saturday 26th November

After an enforced week off due to the freezing weather United entertained Kendal Celtic at home on Saturday, the game was due to be an away match but it was agreed our pitch was in much better condition.

United started slowly and all the play was Celtics causing nervy moments for the home back four. Warning was served and for the first time in our 10 league matches United fell behind, and it was an unusually sloppy goal. Celtic carried the initiative and really pushed hard causing all sorts of problems, United didn’t cope well and Celtic went further ahead after 20 minutes from a poorly defended corner. Graeme Archer playing the lone striker created good chances and worked hard off the ball to try and create openings. A couple of good moves saw United create chances and the play got slowly better as the half went on. Celtic were strong in the air and in the tackle, United seemed a yard slower which didn’t allow time on the ball to move it about. A good move down the right saw Jason Tucker hit a shot that came back off the bar to safety, this is now roughly the fourth time Tucker has hit the woodwork this season but he just hasn’t had the luck. Archer picked up a good ball and turned his defender then from a tight angle with his weaker foot found the corner of the net with a great finish. This got united playing and it was now Celtic who were on the back foot, Daniel Posslethwaite and captain Mcnichol were working hard trying to create chances but still United`s poor passing was causing unnecessary pressure on themselves. The next goal was going to be vital and United at this stage looked the more likely to score which made the somewhat contentious decision given by the referee of a penalty to Celtic was a bitter pill to swallow. It was taken and scored which led to a heated exchange between manager and referee, it was hard to see why he had come to that decision but the goal stood. This destroyed the confidence and Celtic went further ahead before half time leaving united a massive mountain to climb.

Half time 4.1 to Celtic

A tactical change was made which saw young Nathan turner come on down the left, with an emphasis made on getting whipped crosses into the box. United looked much more comfortable and half chances came and went before Dan Posslethwaite made space in a tight situation to score his second goal this season for the senior side. Renewed hope was now being felt and it was united who pushed on looking to get back into the game. Archer worked tirelessly up front and helping to relieve some pressure on the midfield. The game sat at 4.2 for a fair while and even with excellent work by both wingers no way through the Celtic defence could be found. Andy Johnson replaced Posslethwaite who had worked so hard all afternoon and the future certainly looks bright for Daniel. Johnson helped steady the midfield but it wasn’t to be United`s day as Celtic scored a killer 5th with 10 minutes to go making the score 5.2. There was no way back from this and the game was over as a contest apart from one last breakaway from Celtic that had it been scored would have been cruel on United. It wasn’t and the game ended 5.2 to Celtic which matched the score they had beaten us by earlier in the season. Celtic are a good side and deserved the win which will surely put them on the road to promotion. It was such a shame that a vital penalty decision at a crucial time in the game ruined United`s afternoon.

On that point I would like to apologise to the team and supporters as I did let the stand-in referee know what I felt about his decision. No bad language was used but as the manger I set the example and today it was the wrong example. Frustration set in after so many poor decisions and it seemed to get worse but that’s no excuse!!

Man of the match:

The tireless effort, movement and good play of Graeme Archer kept United in the game, he was great today and deserves to be man of the match.

Burneside Academy v Kendal United Saturday 12th November

Kendal made the short journey to Burneside on Saturday to complete the league fixtures against this side after a battle of a home game of which United won 4.3. The game started fast on a small and narrow pitch which really didn’t do either side any favours as space was a premium and hard to find. United didn’t start well and Burneside had all the opening play and could have gone ahead had it not been for a long looping shot coming back off the bar to safety. This saw United waken up and begin to play good football, Jason Tucker started to find space and his crosses were causing all sorts of problems for Burneside. Two great chances fell to Graeme Archer and one of these came crashing back off the bar and Tucker following up put his shot just over. United had there tails up and although the football wasn’t fluent it was improving as the game went on. With 20 minutes gone it was Archer who put United ahead with a cool finish following good play in the Kendal midfield. United grew as the half went on and a pinpoint ball from captain Mcnichol to Archer saw him sprint clear off the Burneside defence to finish with aplomb making it 2.0 to United. Johnny Brennan was having a fine game down the left matching all the good football being played by the other winger Tucker. Burneside created chances but United managed to weather the storm and the half time score was 2.0 to United.

The second half started as expected with Burneside throwing everything at United who always seem to struggle after the interval. United seemed to step off the pace and allow Burneside to get closer and move the ball past them. With 5 minutes of the half played Burneside pulled a goal back and from a united point of view it was a sloppy goal to give away.

From this point on all hell broke loose and United conceded an equaliser again from sloppy defensive play and all the hard work from the first half went down the pan. The introduction of Stephen Moss helped steady the ship but no one could do anything about the next goal as an individual peace of class saw Burneside take the lead. From 2 up United had gone 3.2 down in the space of 15 minutes of the half and seemingly out of the match as Burneside had complete control. United then started to show real heart and the game turned back in our favour with good play seeing Johnny Brennan break free in the box to finish well from a Tucker cross bringing the game back level at 3.3. The next few minutes saw both side go for the win but again it was United who allowed Burneside to come on to them and they scored a fourth goal with 10 minutes remaining making it 4.3. The remaining 10 minutes had to be seen to be believed as United pushed hard for another equaliser which of course allowed gaps at the back and again Burneside saw a shot skim across the bar and away to safety. Good play saw united attacking deep in the Burneside half and after a united player was upended in the box a penalty was awarded. Mcnichol stepped up and fired a low shot to the keepers left which he got down brilliantly to save only to find one of his own players had encroached the area and it was to be taken again. In this situation a mind game is played by both the keeper and the taker so again mcnichol stepped up and went the same way but so did the keeper who again saved superbly. The disappointment was tangible and at the point it seemed the game was lost with only 5 minutes remaining on the watch. But it wasn’t over there much to the credit of the young United side who kept battling away and again good play down the right found Brennan in the box and he fired a hard shot deep into the corner past the keeper much to the delight of his team mates and all United fans watching making the game 4.4 with a couple of minutes remaining. The game wasn’t over here and both sides had good late chances to snatch all 3 points but Kevin Kitchington in goal matched all the good efforts of the away keeper and it was the Burneside keeper who pulled off one last stop to keep the game level. The referee blew his whistle for what was an amazing game that ended 4.4. Credit to both sides who made this an exciting game to watch but i'm sure both managers needed a stiff drink on Saturday night to recover after what was an eventful afternoon. It was another steep learning curve for a young United side who showed real grit and determination to get back into a game they should have had sown up early on but they will learn and improve after this game.

Man of the match:

This week it was really tough for there manager to choose but a young player who has found the step up quite hard impressed today, scoring two crucial goals and getting stuck in all game.

Johnny Brennan

Kendal United versus Braithwaite Junior Cup Round One 29th October

United faced the managers old team on saturday in the first round of the Junior Cup. This was always going to be a tough day for both the captain and manger as many of the Braithwaite lads remain good friends with both. United started slowly and allowed the Braithwaite midfield to gain control and only Mark Davis seemed to settle into the game. All Uniteds play seemed nervy and passess were going astray regularly causing much frustration. That said United matched Braithwaite for the first 40 minutes but never really mustered an attack to speak of. Braithwaite took the lead just before half time after a defensive mix up saw the ball run free for the striker who tucked the ball past Uniteds ever improving keeper Kevin Kinchington. This realy knocked Uniteds confidence and the play was too often breaking down in midfield.

Half time Braithwaite 1 United 0

A change was made at half time that saw Johny Brennan replace Stephen Moss in midfield. The emphasis was made to get the ball out to the wingers as too much football was being played in tight areas causing attacks to break down. Braithwaite started really well and kept possession of the ball makng it hard for United to get going. Kinchington in goal was having a great game and he produced a couple of fine saves and also made the difficult low shots look easy!! United battled well and kept plugging away but it was always going to be Braithwaite who scored the next goal. They dulely did with another good finish making the score 2.0 on the hour mark. A change was made that saw Matty Blamire join Graeme Archer up front as United went for a 4,4,2 formation and this made a definate difference but still no clear cut chances were created. Braithwaite went further ahead when a speaclative shot went in off the post making it 3.0. Nothing United did seemed to work today but the lads kept going but have Kinchington to thank for the scoreline remaining 3.0 as he made a couple of excellent reflex saves. A last throw of the dice saw Ben Dyson go on in attack in an attempt to get a consolation goal but it wasnt to be Uniteds day.

Overall United can hold there heads up high as Braithwaite had to work hard to get this win and the future looks very bright for the young Kendal lads. A bitter sweet day for the United manager as it was great to see the old team and to see them playing well but a gutter for the Kendal lads who couldnt quite find enough on the day!!

United will improve and they should be happy with things so far as the manager certainly is.

Kendal united versus Endmoor reserves 21/10/05

United travelled away to Endmoor reserves today hoping to continue there decent run of form. With two established players missing without reason, a strong squad of 13 still made the short journey down to Endmoor. The game started fast with both teams creating openings but United should have scored in the first 10 minutes but good chances were'nt taken. Both Jason Tucker and Dan Postlethwaite looked dangerous with good movement and pinpoint crossess but a finish in the box was lacking. United played in small phases of excellent football but didnt get close enough initally to stop Endmoor creating chances. It always looked likely that United would score first and it was Rob Warwick who with a little fortune squeezed a ball home at the far post after 20 minutes making the score 1.0. Warwick who was having a fine game marshalling the defence gets himself into good positions as a centre half and plays very good calm football at the back. This seemed to settle United down and the football was becoming more fluent. Graeme Archer and Jason Tucker were on the same wavelength and caused numerious problems for Endmoor. It was Archer who made the score 2.0 and deservedly so as it was United playing the better football by far. Another good finish by a tireless Archer who works so hard for the team. His off the ball movement is first class, again as in previous games United seemed to step off the gas and allowed Endmoor a grip on the game, but United created enough chances to go into the break further ahead.

Half time 2.0 to Kendal United

A small change was made at half time but it turned out to be a trump card, the impressive Dan Postlethwaite was moved in from the wing to centre midfield and he thrived!! United started with more urgency and put Endmoor on the back foot, but it wasnt all United as endmoor created very good openings but found a solid and impresssive Kevin Kinchington in goal hard to beat. This said United stepped up a gear and within 5 minutes the score was 4.0 to United as Archer grabbed a second on the day and dan tucked in a fourth. The football was all being played in the Endmoor half and amazingly over the period of the game Tucker hit the post twice and bar once, but it wasnt to be Jasons day!! Mathew balmire made an instant impact as a substitue scoring with a fine finish making the score 5.0. Endmoor pulled a goal back that deserved the applause of the crowd with a piledriver that even the best of keepers wouldnt have saved making the score 5.1

Blamire was unlucky not to get a hatrick in what was an impressive display by Matty, he saw the keeper make two great saves to deny him scoring further. D.Postlethwaite in midfield looked comfortable with McnNchol and a lot of good play came from these two. United looked dangerous all half and won the game comfotably in the end but it could have been more!!

United face a tough fixture this coming saturday at home to the managers previous club braithwaite in the junior cup. kick off 2pm

If your free next saturday come and support the seniors i know the lads would appreciate the extra support as would the manager!!!!!

Final score Endmoor Reserves 1 Kendal United 5

Kendal united away versus penrith academy 8/10/05

United travelled to penrith today to play penrith academy who on the morning of the game sat 2nd in the league so a tough afternoon was on the cards. With no referee avaliable penrith called upon one of there coaches to run the game and this wasnt perfect but it meant the game could be played. Penrith started the strongest and Kendal didnt seem to wake up until the 10th minute and were looking off the pace and a little apprehensive.Although Kendal started poorly penrith didnt manage to make a chance of any substance, and it was United who broke the deadlock. Nathan wooff fired a low drive past the keeper in uniteds first decent attack, uniteds football was starting to gel but only in small phases!! A new found confidence saw united start to find a rythmn and a second goal followed shortly after from Rob Warwick who had pushed on to support an attack found himself in front of goal and used a flick of the knee to beat the keeper making it 2.0 to united. Wooff was unlucky not to get his 2nd as the penrith Keeper pulled off a great stop initally and got up well to push his follow up over the bar. Jaon tucker nearly added a third but his header from a clearance struck the bar and went over.

Half time 2.0 to kendal

Emphasis was made at half time to get the ball down and use both wingers who hadnt seen a lot of the ball first half. The second periods play was a lot better from kendal but this was not a pretty game by any means so classy football was replaced by grit. A great ball from the back saw Graeme Archer beat the offside trap well and round the keeper to finish comfortably making it 3.0 to United. With Penrith now looking well beaten it was United who played the better football but left the back door open on too many occasions causing concern to the manager. This said it was United who scored a fourth with a classy finish from Glen Mcnicholl who buried a crisp shot into the bottom left hand corner to make it 4.0. With the game seemingly won Kendal lost there grip on the game and allowed Penrith to come onto them and cause problems. Fair warning was given to United and a goal was clawed back to make the score 4.1. It seemed United had settled for the score but Penrith had other ideas making life very uncomfortable for the United back four.  A penalty was awarded to Penrith which seemed a little harsh but it was buried making it 4.2 with ten minutes to go. All hell broke loose now and tackles were suddenly being judged as fouls by what had been a very quiet referee up to this point causing United to defend deep and hang on!! It got worse for United as a third goal was conceded in somewhat farcical circumstances as the ball could have been cleared many times but it wasnt and Penrith got back to 4.3.

With the referee announcing 6 minutes to go it was going to be tight but it was United who held on to get all three points but where the extra 4 minutes at the end of the game came from anybody knows. Not a great game by any means and it really was a close finish but all credit to the young Kendal team who held on to get 3 valauble points.

Man of the match: Glen Mcnicoll

Final score 4.3 to Kendal United

This result see`s United move back up to third in the leauge and with a free week next week a chance to rest and get ready for the next challenge.

Note: The fixture away versus dent has now been changed to an away game versus a resurgent endmoor also away.

Saturday october 1st kendal united v coniston reserves

Match postponed

With a serious amount of rain falling midweek a pitch inspection was required before the game. It was felt with the weather not getting any better that it was best not to risk it as both goalmouths held water and the game was postponed. This gave the manager an unexpected chance to view both uniteds next opponents who were playing each other in Penrith. A wet and windy afternoon was spent getting the low down on both sides in a game that saw dent reserves beat penrith 4.1. Both present tough fixtures for united who travel away to both in the next 3 weeks!!!

Kendal United vs Shap (home) : 3-1

Following two successive defeats the senior side faced a tough home game versus Shap who are well known for being a physical outfit. With a concentration in training on defending the long ball Kendal started with a deeper back four now with the addition of Liam Postlethwaite which has allowed Johnny Brennan to move to midfield. United started brightly from the off and a good chance fell to Graeme Archer who shot wide. Good movement presented United with possession of the ball which started to find the weak spots in the Shap defence. Jason Tucker had probably his best half in a United shirt as his movement and passing was of a highest order producing quality balls. Early on the Shap team can thank there keeper for keeping them in the game as he pulled off a couple of great stops, but eventually United broke them down with a great goal. Archer who had missed a couple of good chances got himself free on the right edge of the box and to the delight of his team mates and the crowd fired a looping shot deep into the left hand corner making it 1.0

Shap had a good couple of chances and one produced a great save from Andrew Thoburn who due to circumstances was United third different keeper this season. Kendal controlled the attacking football but the middle part of the game they allowed themselves to be drawn into a long ball battle. This survived it was Kendal who could have gone further ahead as both Rob Warwick and archer hit the crossbar in the closing stages off the half.

Half time 1.0

The second half started slowly for Kendal and Shap pushed up a gear causing a few worrying moments which were dealt with well helped by another classy performance from young Mark Barnes Davis. Kendal again gained control of the ball in midfield and thought they had sprung the Shap offside trap but after Archer had tapped his ball past the keeper the onrushing Johnny Brennan unfortunately came from an off side position to tap the ball home only to see it scratched out. Tails were now up and it wasn't long before Kendal went further ahead from an unusual source. A fine ball saw debutant Dan Postlethwaite rushing free towards goal and whilst trying to go around the keeper he was felled cynically.  A penalty was given and it was disappointing the referee decided not to even book the obviously very relieved Shap keeper. The unusual source was Rob Warwick who somehow managed to wrangle his way past the usual penalty taker Glen McNichol, he dispatched it well making it 2.0.

McNichol who had had a fine half and been an inspiration to the lads as captain continued to move the ball well and the Shap keeper again performed good saves. In games like this the lads can see the true value of their captain who really should be playing in division 1 but has chosen United as his team. This said Shap in no way gave up the fight but the game was now becoming a little ugly with the coach having to come on after three successive bad tackles to tend to knocks. This stage of the game saw the referee eventually caution 2 Shap players taking the edge off their physical game allowing a little bit more freedom for the young United lads. Archer who had worked really hard all game got his just rewards finding the net with a powerful shot making it 3.0 to a rejuvenated United. It was United who looked like scoring more but this was one of those games and the lads will again learn a lot from this experience. Shap got a late consolation goal straight from a curling corner that beat the whole box full of players to go in off the far post making it 3.1. Kendal finished the game well and stood up well to the obvious wind up tactics of Shap. the referee blew for a deserved final score of 3.1 to United. Thankfully this brought an end to a run of two defeats with top of the table Coniston and second place Penrith next up it's hoped this will continue.

Man of the match Mark Barnes Davis.

Kendal United vs Lunesdale Reserves (away): 5-1

United's first away match of the season saw them travel to Tebay to play Lunesdale, on arrival it was worrying to see the length of the grass!! The pre-match warm up and discussion was to put a bit extra on the passes to ensure completion due to the conditions. United started reasonably brightly but a lack of commitment in passing and clearing saw Lunesdale make the better of opening chances. It was United though who took the lead from a suprise player in Mark Davis, he collected the ball on the left and fired a powerful shot into the far corner making it 1.0 to united.

From that point on Lunesdale played a classic long ball game in windy conditions to perfection, a new experience for a young United team. Lunesdale saw this cause panic and pursued this no end, they equalised and then took the lead using the same tactic. Frustration set in and the lads tried to deal with conditions but to no avail.

Half time score 2.1 to Lunesdale.

The second half continued in the same vein, United went for a 4.4.2 which saw Matty Blamire replace Stephen Moss in midfield. On another day this would work but Lunesdale sealed their supremacy with another long ball goal much to the confusion of United. Further attacks saw Lunesdale increase their lead and although United created chances they never really penetrated the home defence.  A poor decision saw United concede a penalty that was clearly outside the box, this was taken with aplomb making the final score 5.1 to Lunesdale.

A disappointing result but excellent learning curve for the lads as they will face this long ball tactic time and time again in the Westmorland league.

Overall it's still a great start for the senior side and nothing has suprised the manager who has experience of the spoiling tactics that exist in the league.

Kendal United vs Kendal Celtic (home): 2-5

A tough fixture for the lads as it was evident from the warm up Celtic had turned up meaning business!! Both teams had an unbeaten record to protect but a full squad was available and it was Kendal United that made a cracking start to the game seeing a goal ruled offside early on, shortly after a great break Jason Tucker fired a cracking drive past the keeper making it 1.0. United continued the pressure and Matty Blamire made it 2.0 with 20 minutes gone, a good period of pressure followed but Celtic used their experience to turn the game around. It almost seemed as if the lads believed they were going to win the game after going two up. Kendal Celtic stepped up a gear and took the game by the scruff of the neck and used experienced subs like Simon Chapman well. They soon pulled a goal back then made it level after 35 minutes, a disappointing third goal saw United 3.2 down at half time. A good team talk helped in the early periods of the second half and chances fell to mainly midfield players who on another day will see them nestle in the net. This didn't happen and Celtic deservedly scored a 4th with a well taken goal. It was backs to the wall for united but the odd breakaway gave hope of a fightback but it was not to be. The experienced Chapman sealed the game with a super finish making it 5.2 to Celtic. Credit to the United lads they had contributed to a great game and will learn from their experience but equally credit must be given to Mel and his lads for putting up a great fightback.

Man of the match: Lorne Postlethwaite
